Position Information: The Student Disability Resource Center provides services for students with various permanent or temporary disabilities that medically, cognitively, or psychologically impede academic progress. These disabilities may include: learning disabilities; attention deficit disorder; autism, visual, mobility, or hearing impairments; psychological disabilities; chronic systemic disorders (e.g., lupus, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes); fractures, strains, or stress injuries. The Disability Specialist is independently responsible for all student intake functions of the unit and is responsible for insuring that each student understands the internal and external services available to them and the processes to obtain services. He or she performs research, assesses needs, provides disability management counseling, and collaborates with the Associate Director and Director in developing and administering programs which assist the campus in meeting its obligation to students with disabilities as required by applicable Federal and State laws and University policy. They also develops and provides training and education to students, faculty, staff, prospective students, and parents on issues of sensitivity and inclusion for people with disabilities and services provided by the department.
Minimum Requirements: Skill in communicating with students, faculty, staff, and vendors concerning access accommodations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Skill in communicating and responding appropriately to the needs of students with a wide range of disabilities.
Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team, and to work with diverse groups.
Preferred Qualifications: Ability to independently compose letters, memos, reports, and articles using MS Word or similar word processing software with proper grammar.
Skills in using desktop publishing software, adaptive technology, word processing software.
Demonstrated ability to interact with tact and sensitivity with a wide range of individuals, including students, families, staff, faculty, and members of the community, in a high-volume public contact setting.
Keen ability to attention to detail.
Knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations in relation to the narrow focus of specialization.
