About the Unit
The Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME) is a transformational academic unit focused on the intersection of science and engineering. Established in 2011 by the University of Chicago in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, IME explores innovative technologies that address fundamental societal problems through advances in nanoscale manipulation and molecular design. IME is the largest new academic program established by the University since 1988.
This position reports to the Deputy Dean on a wide array of administrative duties, special projects, and initiatives involving Information Technology within the Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME).
- Improve existing technological infrastructure while working toward expansion of computing operations as a whole, consistent support relating to the Nanofabrication Lab, external entities, and providing support for day-to-day requests.
- Develop and coordinate projects and initiatives, addressing issues and requests on behalf of the Deputy Dean.
- Maximize up-time for all technological equipment to minimize disruptions and increase overall productivity.
- Oversee and coordinate all IT initiatives and projects.
- Ensure communication tools are functional and create secondary support systems in the event of equipment failure.
- Assist and respond to all queries, questions, concerns, and requests on behalf of entire user-base.
- Analyze computing systems, processes and controls to ensure that all operations are efficient and functional.
- Drive special projects including operational improvement initiatives.
- Establish and manage existing vendor relationships.
- Maintain industry standards and stay abreast of new software, solutions, releases, and product enhancements.
- Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels.
- Demonstrate creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision- making skills.
- Demonstrate solid planning and organizational skills with an emphasis on detail and thorough follow up.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Strong relevant subject matter knowledge.
- Ability to assess the IT needs on a proactive (vs. reactive) basis and provide recommendations for future technology for the University.
- Ability to communicate technical information to a nontechnical audience in a clear and coherent manner.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
Education, Experience and Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering or related discipline required.
- Minimum seven years of computer user support experience in resolving issues and providing a high level of service required.
- Experience regarding data management and proper protocols / procedures required.
- Experience working within a ISO Class 5, or higher, clean-room required.
- Knowledge of professional IT practices with a concentration on data privacy and security required.
- Experience regarding setup and maintenance of digital signage solutions preferred.
- Experience in demonstrating ability to negotiate, administer, and monitor contracts as well as legal agreements for multiple projects simultaneously preferred.
- Proven supervisory skills; a solutions-oriented, diplomatic problem solver and team player preferred.
- Knowledge pertaining to creating and maintaining local, as well as NAS servers preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Knowledge of (O365 environment, creation of domain system, etc).
- Experience working within a ISO Class 5, or higher, clean-room.
