We are seeking a Communications Manager to join our growing team at Stanford University's Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC). CERC strives to lower healthcare spending in the United States by designing, pilot testing, and evaluating innovative models of care delivery. Our design work is enabled by research in areas including human factors, artificial intelligence, and positive deviance. CERC is housed in the School of Medicine and prides itself in its transdisciplinary collaborations and research methods.

Reporting to the Center Manager, the Communications Manager will establish and maintain overall communications goals to advance national understanding of and support for CERC's unique public mission and research progress. This position is critical in supporting our mission. You will provide communications support in a start-up like atmosphere and are expected to perform a broad range of communications duties. You are expected to strategize and execute simultaneously in order to plan, coordinate, and implement communication programs for CERC, including developing internal and external written communications, web and digital communications, and collateral materials as well as coordinate media relations programs and efforts.


Duties include:
  • Advance national understanding of and support for CERC's unique public mission and research progress.
  • Develop a communications plan, including:
    • Messaging: Articulate and refine messages about CERC and develop supporting content that raises awareness of our mission, and research progress.
    • Audience: Establish target audiences, including partners, donors, and other stakeholders.
    • Channels: Identify and prioritize channels for distribution, including web, social media, and both academic and mainstream press.
  • Specific responsibilities and activities:
    • Define and prioritize, stakeholder needs, media outreach goals.
    • Identify most effective channels and messages for each audience.
    • Create content development plan for web and oversee a visual/interaction design refresh.
    • Follow up on progress with key audiences and stakeholders (e.g. donors, clinical champions).
    • Develop social media plan.
    • Consider search engine optimization.
    • Develop collateral material (e.g. handouts, CERC overviews, white papers).
    • Define approval levels for different types of communications.
    • Leverage School of Medicine communications resources.
    • Formalize CERC branding (use of logo; trade dress).
    • Promote CERC wiki and define content (e.g. “How to,” “What's New”).
    • Start regular internal communications forum.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • On call and ability to respond 24/7.
