Join a creative, talented, and dynamic team working under the direction of the AVP of Learning Design and Engagement to manage teams who design and develop dynamic online learning experiences in a non-profit, higher education environment. As a member of the eLearning Design and Development team, the Director of eLearning Operations reports directly to the AVP of Learning Design and Engagement and supervises managers of an instructional design and content writing team, an instructional media team and elearning development specialists in the design, construction and maintenance of online courses following university best practices. The role requires project management experience to collaborate with academic team leaders, subject matter faculty, internal and external team members to design curriculum for online courses in higher education programs.
Work is broken down by 80% project management and 20% individual contributions. Manages a team of talent instructional media designers and provides high level quality assurance to workflow, work processes and work product.
Required Experience / Education
- Doctoral degree (preferred) or Master's degree plus 5 years’ relevant experience or a combination of education project management experience in a higher education curriculum and elearning development setting.
- Experience in adult learning theory, eLearning and educational technology field.
- Managing a creative and technology oriented team and collaborating with academic partners in a higher education (preferred)
- Teaching in a higher education online environment (preferred)
- Collaborates with ADs and AVP Learning Design & Development to manage program launch schedule and events.
- Contributes to university initiatives including student success and other committees as assigned
- Oversees and evaluates Manager of instructional technology and Manager of learning design
- Operates as a liaison with deans, faculty, subject matter experts/consultants and vendors that provide services to keep projects on track and adjust schedules where needed.
- Hires, evaluates and directly manages instructional design team members on multiple multi-staged course development projects from start to completion.
- Plans, tracks and updates course development and instructional media production schedules, as well as larger projects that serve the university, student success or faculty development efforts.
- Conducts quality assurance checks for course and instructional media production and provides constructive feedback to team members aimed at continuous improvement.
- Assigns, supervises and evaluates internal and external team members under related span of care.
- Ensures proper documentation of standards, best practices, onboarding and training materials
- Adheres to adult learning theory principles in the design and development of eLearning materials, including writing content/scripts for instructional media resources.
- In collaboration with internal team members, assigns and schedules small teams of internal and/or external subject matter consultants, instructional designers, content writers to collaborate with academic staff in the preparation of course development guides that guide course construction and instructional media production.
- Vets copyright and promotes use of open educational resources, as well as etextbooks
- Contributes to forecasting future program and course development resource needs
- Routinely, interact with contractors and vendors to ensure adequate engagement and to meet project needs and deadlines.
- Identify, recommend and acquire content resources
- Identifies, recommends and acquires external services, including independent contractors and vendors, needed on course related projects
- Defines and documents collaboration process; make process improvement recommendations
- Conducts project reviews with contractors; evaluate performance and provide improvement strategies
- Works within established processes, timeframes and follows university’s established best practices in the execution of course design, development and evaluation.
- Analyze learning analytics and course evaluation survey data to make recommendations for course updates.
- Proactively reviews and recommends updates to existing course curricula to address existing or impending resource updates.
- Liaises with publishers to negotiate pricing, content acquisition, adoptions, etextbook or course content solutions and edition updates to existing adoptions throughout the curriculum
- Maintains and analyzes textbook cost, etextbook availability and OER access data
- Proposes curriculum updates based on publisher edition and required resource updates
- Reports user analytic data from within the learning management system to academic leadership
- Investigates copyright clearance options for required resources
- Vets copyright clearance for course material and learning resources
- Reports learning resource data for etextbook costs, adoptions, affordability and OER
- Analyzes course evaluations and learning analytics that support continuous improvement efforts
- Proposes data driven recommendations for curricular edits that meet university values and course design standards/best practices
- Evaluates newly launched courses to recommendation continuous improvement measures
- Researches and implements open educational resources within the curriculum
