The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia is seeking applicants for a non-tenure track research faculty member in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education at the rank of Assistant Professor. Incumbent works with current faculty on an NSF-funded research grant entitled, "A Study of a Technology-enhanced Curriculum Integrating Science, Engineering Design, and Computational Modeling to Achieve Synergistic Learning with Elementary Students." The grant develops, implements, and researches curricula and assessments based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), integrating science, engineering, and computational modeling activities in upper elementary school settings. Design-based research focuses on supporting student learning and teacher professional development. Incumbent provides expertise in implementing NGSS-based instruction in elementary classroom settings and creating NGSS-based professional development. In addition to aiding with the current externally funded project, the faculty member is expected to pursue additional sponsored research in STEM education. The incumbent collaborates with other faculty within Curry and across the university. This research faculty appointment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
A doctorate in science education, learning sciences or a related field is required. Three years of post-doctoral or equivalent educational research experience is required, preferably in implementing NGSS-based classroom research. Experience with data management, leading data collection, and supervision of research staff and student assistants are required. Also required is experience conducting mixed methods research in classroom settings and a record of scientific scholarship and publishing within the field of science education. Preference will be given to candidates with experience as a practicing teacher or teacher educator at the elementary level preferred. A demonstrated commitment to promote diversity and inclusivity in the department, school and university and a commitment to advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups are essential.
