Dental Hygiene Program Director
Full-time; teacher-scholar track position; 4 days per week, 52 weeks per year; tenure eligible; reporting to the chair of the Department of Periodontics. The dental hygiene program director’s duties are many and varied. In addition to overseeing the day to day operations of the hygiene program, the director will be called upon to provide leadership, curriculum design, coordination of facility needs, budget management, student instruction and accreditation oversight for the dental hygiene program.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Represent the growing edge of one’s discipline through range of knowledge, contribution to the literature, and participation in professional organizations.
Role model to faculty and students with regard to scholarship and clinical skills, commitment to the profession, personal responsibility, continuous growth, humanism and school policy. Attend and support school and university meetings and events. Support goals and mission of the school.
Initiate continuous improvement in the academic program and teaching and learning delivery assessment in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Oral Health Education, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, the Chair of the Department of Periodontics and the faculty.
2) Curriculum Management
Work with the Curriculum Committee and faculty to develop the curriculum; evaluate and revise the curriculum as appropriate; develop extramural rotations; create intra-professional and inter-professional learning experiences and recommend faculty and student schedules
3) Personnel and Faculty Management
Work with the Chair of Periodontics for faculty recruitment, faculty development and faculty evaluations. Supervise and schedule faculty for clinical and didactic responsibilities.
4) Facility Management
Assess the program facilities and work with administration to make needed changes and assure proper maintenance.
5) Financial Management
Work with the Chair of the Department of Periodontics to administer and monitor the dental hygiene program budget. Plan overall needs and associated expenses and advocate for needed resources.
6) Admissions Oversight
Direct the dental hygiene admissions process. Update program brochures and college catalog information in cooperation with the Admissions Office.
7) Program Liaison
Coordinate institutional support services; maintain liaison with the University and the School of Dentistry within the organizational chart; coordinate extramural dental hygiene rotations; serve as liaison between the dental hygiene program and local dental hygiene and dental societies and state associations; serve as liaison between dental hygiene program and local charitable and public health dental care providers.
8) Accreditation Oversight
Responsible for maintaining accreditation standards and overseeing the self-study and accreditation process.
9) Teaching Responsibilities
The Program Director is expected to provide student instruction within the program. It is estimated that 30-50% of the directors schedule will be spent teaching.
10) Student Relations
The dental hygiene program director will also serve as a student advisor. Responsibilities include but are not limited to managing academic issues, assuring appropriate remediation, handling conflicts, preparing graduation checklists and degree evaluations.
