Job description

Duties: The primary purpose of this position is to manage an active research laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine. The position requires working with and maintaining mosquito colonies (Anopheles and Aedes), working with and maintaining a small mouse colony, which is required for mosquito maintenance and mosquito infection with rodent malaria parasites (Plasmodium). Additional duties include general laboratory management, ordering supplies, making reagents, as well as assisting with culture of human malaria, mosquito and other cell lines, and in vivo research experiments utilizing biochemical, cellular and molecular biology techniques. This position also may involve work on weekends and University holidays. On the job training in experimental techniques will be provided. Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission deadly human and animal diseases. Our laboratory investigates vector-pathogen interactions and seeks a highly self-motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic individual whose primary job function will be laboratory and mosquito colony management with secondary responsibilities in performing cutting-edge, publication-generating molecular and biochemical methods to understand innate immune recognition and elimination of malaria parasites. On-the-job training in mosquito culture and experimental techniques as well as the necessary molecular, biochemical and cellular techniques will be provided, and it is expected that the research specialist will be able to achieve a high level of independence. This position also may involve work on weekend and University holidays. The individual will work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment requiring good verbal and written communication skills. Strong work ethic and excellent organizational and record keeping skills are essential.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree and 0 to I year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. The successful candidate must have a high degree of self-motivation, strong organizational skills, and enthusiasm for biomedical research. Required qualifications include basic experience in standard molecular, biochemical and cell biology techniques (Nucleic acid purification, PCR, electrophoresis, cell-culture), basic computer skills (Microsoft Office). Previous experience with insect or human/rodent malaria experimental models is desirable, but not necessary. On the job training will be provided for additional necessary techniques. The individual will work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment requiring good verbal and written communication skills. Strong work ethic and excellent organizational and record keeping skills are required.
