The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Agnes Scott College invites applications for a post-doctoral teaching associate position to begin fall 2018, for a period of three years (renewable annually). The associate would join existing faculty in teaching and mentoring students in physics & astronomy at a highly diverse women-centered liberal arts college, with opportunities for integrating scientific approaches in interdisciplinary courses focused on leadership development and global learning, through the college’s signature SUMMIT curriculum.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching disciplinary and interdisciplinary undergraduate courses and labs in physics, possibly including computer programming and/or astronomy.
  • Carrying out a program of research and providing research opportunities to undergraduate students.
  • Mentoring and advising students.
  • Participation in collaborative grant proposals to enrich physics education and research opportunities for Agnes Scott students.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in physics or closely related field. Highly qualified ABD candidates may be considered for a pre-doctoral appointment, which would transition into a Postdoctoral appointment after the Ph.D. is in hand.
  • A program of research that is accessible to undergraduate students and can be implemented using existing resources in the Mary Brown Bullock Science Center, Bradley Observatory, and/or the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA).

Resources for research

  • Departmental and collaborative research facilities at the college, including optics, laser physics, spectroscopy, LIDAR, and scientific computing.
  • Potential collaborations through connections to physics, astronomy, computational sciences, science education and related departments at other Atlanta-area colleges and Universities.
  • Potential modest start-up funding to facilitate research with students. • Access to three meter-class telescopes in the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) http://saraobservatory.org/
