Job Description:
The Department of Literatures and Languages at Mills College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Adjunct Professor in English specializing in Creative Writing, Fiction / Creative Nonfiction to beginAugust 1, 2018. The undergraduate and MFA Creative Writing programs at Mills College are among the most diverse in the country and alumnae regularly go on to publish, teach, and edit. The successful candidate will have published at least one book of narrative prose; be conversant with a wide range of literary and aesthetic traditions; have significant teaching experience; and a proven track record of mentoring undergraduate and MFA students in fiction and creative nonfiction. The Assistant Adjunct Professor will be responsible for teaching 5.5 - 6 courses per year plus departmental service. Teaching will include a combination of workshops and craft classes in narrative prose at the beginning, advanced, and graduate level; graduate thesis direction; and the pedagogy of creative writing. At least one undergraduate course may be mixed genre (poetry and prose) and the successful candidate will be confident teaching in this context. Other responsibilities include academic advising for MFA in prose students, service on admissions and community engagement fellowship committees, attendance at creative writing faculty meetings and weekly creative writing events, and other departmental service to be determined.

This is a one-year renewable contract position. Salary is $60,000 annually.

Candidates should have:

  • An MFA in Creative Writing
  • Experience teaching a wide variety of creative writing courses at the undergraduate level including mixed genre introductory courses, fiction, and creative nonfiction
  • Experience teaching graduate level workshops and craft courses with a focus on fiction and creative nonfiction
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to work with a diverse and dynamic student population
Additional Information:
This is full-time exempt position. Salary is $60,000 per year, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 12 sick days and 10 paid holidays annually.
