The Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR), Office of the Vice Provost for Research has an immediate opportunity for a animal care technician position on the Medical Campus.

Job Summary (Purpose and Function):

The Animal Care Technician provides daily care for various species of animals. Duties include daily observation; feeding and watering; sanitizing and/or sterilizing animal cages and equipment; exercising and providing environmental enrichment. The Technician may assist veterinary and research staff with procedures such as collection of biological samples and administration of medications and treatments. The Technician must receive and store materials/supplies as well as maintain animal records.


  • Provide animal husbandry to a variety of animals including non-human primates (NHP). This will include daily observation, feeding, watering, exercising and providing environmental enrichment to research animals housed in multiple facilities.
  • Monitor animal room light cycles and document room environment (temperature and humidity) on a daily basis. Sanitize animal cages and equipment. Receive animals and supplies from vendors and properly house the animals and store supplies according to established SOPs.
  • Prepare animal diets, cages and water for autoclaving. Operate autoclaves to sterilize animal food, water and equipment.
  • Review/inspect the animal facility area and report problems to Supervisor (and or Physical Plant, Facilities or Energy Management) so work orders for repairs can be prepared.
  • Assist veterinary and research staff with animal procedures such as collection of biological samples and administration of medications/treatments. Observe animals for signs of injury, discomfort and disease and report findings to Supervisors and/or Veterinary staff. Assist with treatment of sick animals as directed. Assist with monitoring animal health status through the use of established sentinel program.
  • Monitor and change ventilated cage rack filters and animal room filters. Provide preventive maintenance on ventilated racks. Clean and maintain biosafety hoods and animal change stations in animal rooms.
  • Some weekend/holiday/evening work is required.
  • Participation in the department’s Emergency Response Team will be strongly encouraged.
  • Must be able to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

  • High School or equivalent and one (1) year of animal care experience, experience in an animal research facility preferred.
  • Previous experience in the handling of multiple animal species, including Non-Human Primates (NHP) and Virus Antigen Free (VAF) rodents, is preferred.
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level is preferred and will be strongly encouraged.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge
    • Handling and care of lab animal species — Thorough knowledge of the handling and care of lab animal species
    • Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.


  • Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Speaking — Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Reading Comprehension — Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

  • Trunk Strength — The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.
