GW’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. MITM is searching for a highly motivated individual to work with a team of clinical and basic scientist investigators aiming to develop a controlled human hookworm challenge model for vaccine testing and investigate the molecular biology of hookworm infections. This person must work according to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in the lab which includes, writing and editing of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) and worksheets, following Laboratory Protocols, working under aseptic conditions, and operating under a rigorous QC/QA system. Prior experience working in a regulated environment is highly desired and willingness to work with human and animal specimens, including blood, feces and urine is also important. This person’s primary duties will be to raise hookworm larvae (L3), preparing L3 doses for infection of humans and animals, fecal testing for egg counts in human and animals, RT-PCR, qPCR, molecular biology, and working with infectious hookworm larvae. The successful applicant will also be responsible for daily operations of the L3 cGMP facility, including ordering, stocking, and supervising personnel.
• Clinical parasitology and larvae production for human and animal infection
• Maintaining laboratory equipment in compliance with cGMP as well as other laboratory functions
• Keeping records consistent with cGMP
• Handling of human and animal specimens.

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline, plus 2 years of relevant professional experience or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. The minimum degree required for this position is a BS and/or BA in Biology or a related area, and a minimum of 12 months of research laboratory experience. Experience with cGMP and molecular biology is highly desired. Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills are required. Experience handling animals (rodents and dogs) and working with parasitic nematodes is preferred. The person will be expected to work independently after training.
