Job Summary:

The Oncology Venture Associate will identify and manage opportunities to translate University oncology research into novel products and services. The Oncology Venture Associate will engage closely with leading faculty to identify and develop commercial opportunities around research programs with the potential for high impact including those where no intellectual property has yet been established and those where the commercial trajectory is not yet clear. The Oncology Venture Associate will work with entrepreneurs and with interns to support the creation and launch of start-ups around many of these opportunities. The person will inspire, manage, coach and mentor faculty, researchers, interns, and other entrepreneurs to support the creation of life sciences start-ups. The Oncology Venture Associate will think and act like a venture CEO to maximize the impact of the most transformative science within their vertical. The Oncology Venture Associate will build commercialization strategies consistent with and synergistic with activities of the the rest of the Oncology team including the Oncology Lead and the Intellectual Property Strategist for Oncology.

Responsibilities:
  • Scouting for new commercial opportunities and building relationships with key faculty.
  • Evaluating the commercial feasibility of research discoveries and the entrepreneurial inclinations of researchers and students.
  • Launching new ventures and recruiting talent and other needed resources.
  • Guiding researchers and entrepreneurs to appropriate Polsky Center and Chicago regional entrepreneurship programs.
  • Supporting, educating, mentoring, and informing researchers and new entrepreneurs on the best practices in life sciences ventures, including supporting creation of fund raising materials, advising on start-ups structure, and intellectual property strategy, regulatory considerations, and market evaluation.
  • Collaborate with other Polsky and University staff to continuously improve university-wide policies and programs that enable and support the launching of new life sciences companies.
  • Managing relationships with launched companies from the Oncology vertical.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • Master's degree in the biological sciences or an MBA is required
  • Candidates will have both strong science and business skills with some exposure to entrepreneurship.
  • Candidates need to have a proven track record of working independently, being goal oriented, and demonstration of being innovative in a business environment.
  • Ability to manage complex initiatives involving faculty and external networks required.
  • Recognized facility in coaching and mentoring is required.
  • Experience collaborating with academic faculty is preferred.
  • Specific experience with early stage funding for invention advancement is preferred.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to use computer for extended periods, keyboarding; regular attendance.
  • Work is mostly sedentary.
  • Occasional travel between Hyde Park and downtown is required. Some travel necessary.
