Position Status: Temporary/Contract Positions

Basic Function:
The Event Management/Sports Promotion Coordinator Intern is responsible for overseeing all aspects of event management for intercollegiate events, tournaments and special events at WPI as well as promote WPI intercollegiate events to increase community interest and involvement. This position is a full-time (10 months,) benefit-eligible, two-year appointment with funding support through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women's Internship Grant.

  • Oversee all aspects of event management for intercollegiate events, tournaments and special events at WPI
  • Is a member of the department’s Event Management Group, which is comprised of athletic staff including: associate athletic directors, assistant athletic director, operations manager, facilities manager and event managers
  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers for all events. Develop a comprehensive plan to recruit and retain student workers
  • Update and maintain all standard operating procedures for home contests
  • Develop a strategic plan to market and promote WPI intercollegiate events to increase community interest and involvement
  • Collaborate with marketing, campus community, and area businesses to secure promotions and sponsorships
  • Is the point person for coordinating halftime events
  • Work with appropriate department staff members in planning the Hall of Fame Dinner, homecoming, athletic banquet, fundraising and awareness events, and athletic banquet
  • Work with SAAC to oversee and promote the Central Massachusetts Special Olympic basketball community games held at WPI
  • Attend meetings for event management; regular department meetings; university’s service provider group. Will also attend NEWMAC conference meetings

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills that include working knowledge of various software packages (Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, results oriented environment
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise good judgment
  • Valid driver’s license and pre-employment criminal records check
