Under direction maintains, services and repairs a variety of boiler (heating) and plumbing equipment.
Examples of Duties/ Essential Job Functions
Duties include analyzing boiler and plumbing problems, making initial estimates of needed repairs, labor and materials costs for project, providing regularly needed service maintenance to boilers and auxiliary equipment, treat and administer chemical program to boilers, install and repair plumbing equipment, repair boiler electrical circuits and control systems, perform arc and gas welding on boilers, and perform other duties as needed.
Employment Standards/ Minimum Qualifications
Education: Completion of heating or plumbing apprenticeship program or acceptable equivalent program.
Experience: Journeyman experience in installation, repair and maintenance of heating (boilers) and plumbing systems or attained regular status as a Maintenance Specialist within the district.
Licenses & Certificates: Valid Driver's License.
Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of firetube, double pass and four pass boilers, materials, tools and methods used in the maintenance of heating and plumbing systems, safety regulations and codes and safe work practices around large heating units, and chemical water treatment techniques, high low pressure boilers and of heating pneumatic, pumps, and other mechanical equipment, blueprints, drawing diagrams and sketches, various types of heat exchanges, and time and materials cost estimating techniques. Skill to read and understand sketches, blueprints, or written instructions, perform skilled work according to plans, specifications and instructions, prepare rough sketches for projects, use and maintain tools of the trade, install, clean and overhaul boilers and related equipment of different types. Ability to assign, monitor, and review the work of others. Ability to receive and follow instructions and appropriately interact with students, staff, faculty and the public. Ability to learn and apply college and district policies and procedures.
The examination process will include screening to ensure applications are complete and meet all minimum qualifications. The application requires the completion of Supplemental Questions to evaluate your education, training and experience relative to the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. Answers should be as complete as possible, as no additional information will be accepted from applicants once the application has been submitted. Only the most qualified applicants, who pass the minimum qualifications review, will be invited to the examination process.
The examination process will include a competency exam (30% weight) and an oral interview exam (70% weight). Of those achieving a passing score on the competency exam, only the 10 highest scoring candidates, plus ties, will be invited to the oral interview exam. Passing score is 75% out of 100% on each testing section.

Candidates who attain a passing score on each part of the examination will be placed in rank order on an Open-Competitive List. Using the same process, a separate Promotional List will be established and both Lists will be used concurrently. Unless otherwise indicated, the eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for at least six months.
