Summary of Duties:
This position will be involved in food safety research with connections to the growing, harvesting, packing and processing of raw agricultural commodities (e.g. tree fruits, berries, grains, pulses, and vegetables). Work is diverse and will consist of lab and field-based research. Travel is necessary to remote locations and will require the individual to operate a motor vehicle. Lab duties will consist of cultivating, detecting, and enumerating Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) foodborne pathogens on foods and from the growing, harvesting, packing, holding, or processing environment. Research will consist of research planning, project planning and execution, data collection and analysis, and summarizing all aspects of project methods and results. Field based research will take place outdoors and will involve exposure to the elements throughout the year as well as physical demands of planting, growing, and harvesting various crops. Occasional shifts in the work day to meet project requirements are to be expected, primarily associated with starting the word day prior to 8 am.
A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
