The Office of Financial Aid (OFA) welcomes applications for a Financial Aid Counselor to work as part of a counseling team. Our Financial Aid Counselors provide excellent customer service to all clients who visit or contact the Office of Financial Aid, ensuring the customer is provided the information they need to navigate through the financial aid and scholarship process. You will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day counseling services offered by the Office of Financial Aid to students and their families. Maintaining a thorough and current working knowledge of all federal Title IV, State of Colorado, and institutional rules, regulations and procedures, this position ensures the accurate release of information and program compliance.

We administer over $360M in grants, scholarships, work-study and loans for over 20,000 students each year. Our staff consists of 38 full-time professional employees and 50-60 student employees.

What your key responsibilities will be:




Counseling
  • Award, interpret and explain federal Title IV, state and institutional regulations to clients and the impact of regulations on funding levels, eligibility and processing.
  • Apply rules and regulations and analyze individual client circumstances, resolves problems and explains results.
  • Exercise professional judgment when clients have unusual financial circumstances, to determine additional eligibility.
  • Counsel and advise students on general and specific information regarding all aspects of Title IV, state and institutional financial aid.
  • Adjust awards as necessary to reflect student's enrollment and eligibility, using the CU Student Information System (CU-SIS), National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), FAA Access Online, and MS Office applications to document changes and current student resource (income, family size, etc.) information.
  • Continually assess customer service and proactively identify and address issues that may impede quality service.
  • Responsible for providing individual and group financial aid advice to students and parents, including adequate loan counseling and financial literacy information.

Processing:
  • Assist in processing Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals and Professional Judgement appeals.
  • Assist with spring awarding, Student Aid Report (SAR) Corrections, PLUS loan increases, staff reviews, over awards, and other projects as assigned.
  • Assist with Verification Processing or awarding projects as needed.
  • Ensure that the work assigned is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Cross-train with other teams and assist with processing needs as necessary.

Outreach:
  • Participate in office outreach events, including events held in the evening and on weekends.
  • Conduct and develop presentations for prospective and current students.
  • Assist Admissions with recruitment events, includes presenting and tabling events.
  • Partner with campus and community entities to reach out to underrepresented students to provide presentations, workshops, or materials.

Specific Team Duties:

Concierge:
  • Assist with hiring, supervising and motivating work-study students responsible for front-line questions and processes associated with all financial aid programs.
  • Ensure student staff is trained to answer questions in a courteous and timely manner in accordance with rules, regulations and guidelines. Evaluate student work performance and approve work schedules.

Connections:
  • Responsible for counseling law students at the Law School during designated shifts, includes loan entrance/exit counseling workshops.
  • Liaison for the continuing education office and study abroad program.
  • May assist with hiring, supervising, evaluating and motivating work-study students.

Scholarships:
  • Manage institutional and private scholarship programs, develop a positive liaison relationship with students, donors, and campus/CU system stakeholders, create, publish and collect application materials; and maintain accurate records of eligibility, reconciliation, and prepare performance reports.
  • May assist with hiring, supervising, evaluating and motivating work-study students.

Processing:
  • Process verification documents, loans, and other documents.
  • Inform students of missing documents, deadlines, and how to access information online.
  • Review and evaluate documents in accordance with all Title IV financial aid rules, regulations and office policies.
  • May assist with hiring, supervising, evaluating and motivating work-study students.

Process Effectiveness
  • Review operational efficiency and implement improvement to enhance work effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain written policies and procedures related to the assigned areas of responsibility and participate in and provide information for internal and external audits.

Training/Professional Development
  • Participate in training seminars, conferences, committee meetings, etc. for professional development in the areas of Title IV financial aid.
  • Continually learns new laws and program guidelines to ensure compliance for Title IV aid requirements.

The salary range for this position starts at $42,000.

Qualifications

What we require:
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited 4 year institution of higher education is required.
  • One year of financial aid or student services experience.
  • Experience with a student information system and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Final candidate must successfully pass a background check and cannot be in default on a student loan either upon hire or while employed in this position.

What you will need:
  • A strong commitment to customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to conduct presentations to both small and large groups.

What we'd like you to have:
  • Two years of financial aid/scholarships experience in a higher education setting.
  • One year experience working with scholarship programs and donor relations.
  • Working knowledge of federal financial aid data systems including NSLDS, FAA Access, and COD.
  • Knowledge of State of Colorado financial aid regulations.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience with the ability to supervise a diverse staff by defining goals and objectives, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience with the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and integrated imaging products.
  • Experience working with underrepresented student populations.
  • One year experience with fund management or accounting.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
