Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree with a major in chemistry, biology, natural sciences, or related discipline. Advanced degree preferred in aforementioned disciplines. An official or copy of an official, transcript will be required prior to an offer of employment. (Applicants with degrees from foreign institutions must have the transcripts evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services and the applicant is responsible for all costs associated with that evaluation).

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum 7 years of laboratory experience and 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience in a professional or academic setting. Experience may include direct supervision of staff including staff hiring/management, managing daily operations and production of staff, and assuring high quality results are reported and in a safe working environment. Experience may also include demonstrated non-supervisory leadership including team or project lead that included working closely with staff, coordinating effort, communicating with others, proposing decisions, working closely with other supervisors. Must have knowledge of, and preferably direct experience with the primary analytical tools and methods used in an Organic Chemistry Laboratory (Gas Chromatography, (GC), GC/MS, Carbon analyses, sample prep in air, soil, water, tissue.

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for managing the Organic Chemistry Unit for the Environmental Health Division at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). Staff management responsibilities include: managing the daily work activities, directing employees, recruiting, facilitating staff training, evaluating employee performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. Other duties include: monitoring work flow and lab operations, approving/monitoring laboratory expenditures, consulting with internal and external colleagues regarding scientific and matters, reviewing and evaluating test reports.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with other colleagues, supervisors, and all customers and partners. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

This position is a supervisory position and reports to the Director of the Environmental Health Division.

Possess and maintain eligibility to hold a valid Wisconsin's driver's license and a driving record that meets the guidelines of UW Risk Management.

Knowledge of analytical instrumentation for the measurement of organic constituents - such as GC, GC/MS, Carbon analysis methods, sample preparation techniques for various environmental matrices.
Knowledge of analytical balances and other common laboratory equipment.
Knowledge of overall laboratory operations, safety protocols, data validation, and staff cross training and back-up procedures
Knowledge and experience in SOPs as they pertain to industrial hygiene analyses and commensurate data analysis
Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards for Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act.
Experience with Microsoft Office products.
Knowledge of quality assurance as it applies to industrial hygiene analysis.
Effective written and oral communication skills.

Effective interpersonal skills.
