RESEARCH SPECIALIST A/B
Duties: We are looking for someone who is excited to learn and perform ultrasound evaluations, in mice. This is a very powerful tool that can be used not only to evaluate disease in a living animal, but also can guide interventions like surgery and tumor biopsy. The Research Specialist will play an essential role in our mouse hospital, whose purpose is efficient assessment of potential therapies for human pancreatic cancer. We use a genetically engineered animal model of the disease, and we use ultrasound to evaluate tumor characteristics (we are happy to train a qualified candidate in ultrasound). We also learn and apply other technical approaches including surgical interventions, and it's important that the research specialist be willing and able to learn new techniques as needed. We do a great deal of work with both healthy and cancer-ridden animals and careful compassionate animal handling is vital. A small amount of bench work is part of the position, as is basic laboratory management (monitoring supplies, managing digital file backups and storage). We work as a team, and a friendly attitude and collaborative approach to projects is expected. Research Specialist A primary duties will include: Evaluation of disease and progression in mice using abdominal ultrasound (training will be provided); breeding colony management; treatment administration; necropsy and tissue handling. Research Specialist B: In addition to the above, the RS B will take a lead role in managing study data; preparation of treatments using conventional bench techniques; devise and carry out breeding programs for special models; assess and manage sick animals; oversee databases of breeding animals and experimental data; manage supplies and equipment. Assist with writing protocols and Standard Operating Procedures. The Research Specialist B will be expected to work independently. This position may involve work on weekends and University holidays.
Qualifications: Research Specialist A: Bachelor's degree with 0 to 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience in a rodent breeding colony preferred; experience with barrier facility procedures preferred. Research Specialist B: Bachelor's degree with 1 year to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Must have experience with a mouse breeding colony. Must have experience working in a rodent barrier facility. Experience in a research laboratory strongly preferred. Some benchwork experience strongly preferred. Both levels: The successful applicant would be adaptable and interested in learning new systems, procedures and techniques. They should be team oriented and have the flexibility to meet varied and changing project needs. We work individually, but we all contribute to complete projects as a team. We all need to be self-directed and able to work independently. The applicant should be detail oriented and have good communication, computer and organizational skills.
