The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarian to serve as Research Law Librarian. Working closely with the Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services, the Research Law Librarian will take primary responsibility for providing research and reference service in the Law Library's faculty services program, which includes performing legal and interdisciplinary research, completing research projects, administering efforts to highlight faculty scholarship, and creating other opportunities to serve and partner with the Law Faculty. In addition, the Research Law Librarian will participate in the Law Library's instructional programs, share in collection development responsibilities, and provide effective user services at the Reference Desk.
• Providing significant and exceptional research assistance to all faculty members as needed.
• Serving as a member of the Law Library's Research Services department, providing excellent and responsive general information and legal research services through regular shifts at the Reference Desk, including evenings and weekends as needed.
• Participating in developing and teaching the first-year legal research course, a one credit, mandatory course.
• Providing specialized legal research consultations to law students, faculty, and staff, including in experiential learning settings.
• Collaborating with all librarians in the Research Services department to design, develop, and maintain the research webpages on the Law Library website, including LibGuides.
• Participating in Law Library collection development efforts, including selection, assessment, and management of resources.
• As appropriate, leading tours, orientations, and workshops, such as for the Saturday Academy of Law.
• Taking a leadership role in the outreach and communication activities of the Law Library. These may include coordinating publicity for Library events, promoting Library participation in Law School and university-wide events, and facilitating the use of online tools for outreach.
• Participating actively and effectively on Law Library committees, task forces, and project teams as appropriate.
• Representing the Law Library on various Law School, campus-wide, and Library System committees and at various meetings and other functions as appropriate.
• Participating in and contributing to the profession through professional activities outside the Law Library, including university and public service, and/or research and other creative activity. These activities normally relate to and enhance performance of the primary position responsibilities.
• Developing and maintaining awareness of current developments in the fields of law, library science, and legal research to enhance performance of primary position responsibilities.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.
J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution is required. Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience is also required.
Candidates should have extensive knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats; fluency with new and emerging technologies as they relate to information literacy, legal practice, and library services; and outstanding interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
Candidates should possess up to two years of successful experience in academic law libraries, show demonstrated background in providing research and other relevant library services to law faculty; possess successful experience and skill in providing legal research and reference services; and, have successful experience in providing legal research training sessions to law students.
Candidate must show demonstrated experience shepherding ideas and projects through an organization without a formal leadership role; and, demonstrate an ability to conceptualize and implement processes and programs both independently and in a team, in a dynamically changing environment.
Finally, preferred candidate will have previous work experience in assessing and selecting collections in law, and practice experience as an attorney or professional legal experience.
