Job description

Position Summary: Individual in this position will assist in veterinary diagnostic microbiology work. Specific duties include general laboratory maintenance, processing a wide variety of animal specimens for bacterial and fungal culture, DNA extraction, PCR, meticulous record keeping, data entry.

Responsibilities: Perform test procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases of animals. 10% - Evaluate submission forms to determine the appropriate tests for each specimen. Includes Bacteriology, Mycology, and Molecular; Call clinics to clarify ambiguous test requests. 25% - Set up the specimen on the appropriate test media and incubate at appropriate temperature and atmosphere. 5% - Prepare and examine cytospin gram stains. 30% - Perform bacterial isolation, identification and susceptibility testing 10% - Enter preliminary and final results into Vetview.

Qualifications: Associates degree and some related experience required. Area-specific certification (i.e.; SCUBA) and training may be required. Other training will be provided as appropriate (i.e.; UGA HazMat training).
