The College of Social Sciences of the University of West Georgia invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mass Communications to begin July 1, 2019.
The chair will serve as a member of the College of Social Sciences Administrative Council and be responsible for administrative leadership including budgetary management of a department with 23 full-time faculty, 5 full-time staff, and over 600 undergraduates.
The successful candidate will be a teacher of excellence and accomplished scholar with experience in academic administration; hold a record of commitment to diversity and inclusion; possess excellent communication, mentoring, and organizational skills; demonstrate the ability to lead an expanding, diverse department that houses several academic concentrations, including Convergence Journalism, Digital Media & Telecommunication, Film & Video Production, and Public Relations, as well as a growing Communication Studies curriculum. The department is home to cutting-edge experiential learning labs, including bluestone Public Relations Firm, The West Georgian newspaper, The WOLF Internet Radio, and WUTV. The Department of Mass Communications was awarded University System of Georgia Teaching Excellence Award in 2016. Located less than an hour west of Atlanta, a top-10 U.S. media market, the department partners with a mix of professionals to offer networking, professional development, and internship opportunities.
Faculty appointment may be at associate or full professor; the chair position is a renewable 12-month contract. A terminal degree in mass communications or a closely related field and a record of excellence in teaching, scholarly achievement, and leadership are required.
