I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University (GW) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President of Research. Nominees must be tenured members of the GW faculty. The position reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Provost's leadership team.

The individual selected for this position will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to GW's deep commitment to the research of its faculty and students. The Vice President will work collaboratively with the President, Vice Presidents, Deans, other campus leaders, members of the Faculty Senate, faculty, staff, students, and external constituents to advance the institution's research mission. The Vice President will offer new ideas and insights to key leaders, provide input and feedback on initiatives, and champion programs that promote research across the University.

It is expected that the Vice President for Research will have experience with securing external support from private research portfolio, and experience with securing external support from private research oriented foundations and government funding agencies such as the National Institute of Health, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation, as well as a broad vision for research at the university that includes support for unfunded research. Responsibilities also will include oversight of sponsored projects administration and research integrity, the management of central research cores and facilities, and collaboration with health and safety officials with respect to the use and maintenance of facilities.

The individual selected will provide direction to all faculty, staff, students and organizational units in the development of the strategic research plans and by supporting best practices, and monitoring progress through appropriate performance indicators. A critical component of GW's strategic plan and this position will be the promotion of cross-school research engagements related to major interdisciplinary undertakings.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified applicants will be a tenured faculty member at GW and have a minimum of five (5) years leadership level experience.
