About the Program:
The Pierce College music program is a vibrant and growing program with excellent facilities, talented students, and a reputation in the community for creative programing and excellent performance. As a leading program amongst community colleges in the state of Washington, our faculty collaborate across the state in music curriculum and degree planning. The department prepares and transfers music majors to 4-year music performance and music education programs. Department faculty collaborate across the fine and performing arts with other faculty and students, and work closely with student programming and activities for funding and event planning. The successful candidate will join a dynamic district music department that includes choral and instrumental performance courses, private instruction courses, music theory curriculum, and music lecture courses.  Courses in the program serve music majors, students seeking humanities electives, and community members. Additionally the department has multiple performance groups including: Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, and various ensembles. The Pierce College Concert Band has been a staple of the music community for over 40 years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include:

  • Direct the Pierce College Concert Band, and continue its legacy of excellence
  • Provide district leadership in instrumental music curriculum, staffing, and programming
  • Teach a broad spectrum of courses in the department, including lecture and performance
  • Represent the Pierce College music department in the community and recruit members for the program/groups within the department
  • Prepare forms and advocate for program funding through colleges processes
  • Work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administration within music and across Pierce college
  • Recruit students from local high schools to perform and participate in the band
  • engage in course evaluation that consists of analysis of achievement of course outcomes, success of students in subsequent courses, and impact on retention and graduation rates
  • Embrace and engage in innovation in the classroom (campus, online, hybrid) as part of continuous professional development
  • Demonstrate multicultural competence, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity
  • View assessment as formative in teaching and learning, using analytics and evidence to reflect on and improve learning
  • Incorporate active learning and strategic use of technology
  • Teach, advise, and mentor students holistically from access to completion
  • Serve on and/or lead a variety of committees dealing with teaching/learning, as well as student and district related issues
  • Attend and participate in regular department and division meetings
  • Participate in the First-Year Faculty Cohort in the first year of the tenure process
  • Participate in shared governance and contribute to a positive learning environment
  • Perform other academic duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
Master's, DMA, or PhD Degree in Music or related field. Ability to conduct large instrumental ensembles such as a concert band.

Terms of Employment:
This position, which is contingent upon funding, is a full-time, tenure-track assignment of 173 contracted days per year with the tenure process starting in September 2018, and with the opportunity to start working an earlier quarter. Assignment may include district discipline/program coordination, as well as evening, hybrid, and/or online teaching. This is a District position with a "home" campus assignment. Initial placement of this position will be at the Puyallup campus. Candidates will be working for a District Dean and will be required to attend district meetings as well as collaborate with colleagues across the district and across departments.
 
Initial salary placement is based on the current full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon education and experience. Salary placement for newly hired full-time faculty will be at one of five levels based upon qualifications including teaching experience and credentials. The five levels range from $51,462 to $55,751 per 173-day academic year. Opportunities for summer employment and other assignments are in addition to the base salary.

Conditions of Employment:

  • As a condition of employment, all Full-time Faculty bargaining unit members must either join the Pierce College Federation of Teachers or pay a representation fee.
