The Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society (SMS) seeks nominations and applications for its next executive director, to assume office in fall 2018.
SMS is an international professional society devoted to the advancement of strategic management scholarship and practice. Its 3,000 members are largely professors from prominent business schools but include also practitioners and consultants; 43% are from North America, 34% from Europe, and 13% from Asia. Like other learned societies, SMS runs conferences, sponsors journals, funds research, confers awards, and helps professionals to network. A financially healthy SMS has run recent conferences in Italy, the U.S., Costa Rica, and Canada; forthcoming events are in Norway, India, and France. At any moment, several hundred members are actively involved worldwide in conference planning, proposal review, journal editing, and the like. Their work is coordinated by a Chicago-based staff of five.
For its executive director, the SMS Board seeks a person with experience relevant to association management and comfort in work with academics from varied nations running SMS activities on a volunteer basis. Habits of collegiality, respect, and good humor are essential, as are well developed organizational, office management, IT, and communication skills. Best candidates will have thoughtful perspectives on the changing world of professional societies and on paths forward for SMS.
The Board has developed a Prospectus for this position, available at SMS Prospectus and www.strategicmanagement.net. Applicants should review this Prospectus and follow the instructions on its final page. SMS has engaged AGB Search to assist this search.
