The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is seeking a candidate who can work as part of a creative team to develop meaningful communications that tell the complex and exciting story of research at Illinois. Create high-profile visual communications for campus-level initiatives and activities that support the Illinois research community. Think holistically about institutional goals, recommend solutions to design challenges (within the University's visual identity system), and translate ideas into high-impact print and electronic materials.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop visual communications that will include printed marketing materials, websites, infographics, figures, digital displays, social media graphics, promotional items, and more. Work with the OVCR communications team to ensure a high standard of creative materials. Use the latest Adobe creative suite software to take projects from concept to execution. Conceive and help implement creative communications solutions for OVCR audiences, including campus leadership, faculty, donors, external partners, media, community organizations, and others. Provide visual design expertise and advice to units that report to and work with the OVCR. Collaborate with printers regarding format, processes, and best practices to achieve superior printed materials. Research emerging trends in visual communication, graphic design, typography, and web and social media design and their potential effect on OVCR communications. Provide informal mentoring to OVCR graphic design interns.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in design, communications, or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending upon bredth and depth of experience as it relates to this position.

Experience: Required: Two years of graphic design experience. Preferred: Three to five years of graphic design experience. Experience working as part of a team to develop research-related marketing or communications, especially for a scholarly audience. Experience with HTML and CSS.

Knowledge: Required: Ability to translate complex ideas into creative visual solutions. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Adept layout composition and mechanical skills to produce files for print and web channels. Strong understanding of printing processes, color-matching systems, and typography. Strong organizational skills and a thorough knowledge of all aspects of print and digital production. Curiosity, flexibility, and commitment to creative thinking. Advanced skills in current design software including Adobe Creative Cloud. Preferred: An understanding of web interface and user experience design. Familiarity with University of Illinois WebTools, higher education marketing, and the Urbana campus. Video, photography, and/or animation skills.

This is an academic professional, full-time, 12-month position renewed annually pending continued funding and progress within the position. The estimated starting date is as soon as possible after closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and skills.
