General Practice Veterinary Technician

Primary Function of Organization Unit: The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 25,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties: Provide technical support for the General Practice service. Incumbent will assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, animal handling, restraint, surgery/ anesthesia. Administer treatments, monitor patients, perform lab tests, and maintain medical records. Maintain supplies and equipment, including repair schedules. Ensure compliance with all Infectious Disease protocols. Perform administrative rolefor service; inventory control, correct billing, scheduling, supply ordering / purchasing, monitoring treatment sheets for accuracy, and ensuring good communication and collaboration with all ancillary services and other areas of the hospital. Candidate will teach technical skills to 4th year veterinary students. The position is responsible for breaking down various technical tasks into steps and effectively articulate to students how to perform these tasks (PE, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, intubation, post op care, basic cytology/lab work etc.) Responsible for identifying areas where students will need additional help/improvement.
Department Required Skills: -Previous veterinary technician experience -Excellent technical skills, ex. must be fluent in sample collection, venipuncture, catheter placement and restraint -MS Word, Excel -Good team player -Excellent communication and organization skills -Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs -Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students -Must be able to work independently -Registered Veterinary Technician
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: -At least two years of previous technician experience. -Previous experience in a teaching hospital.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). Must be eligible to become registered in the state of North Carolina.
