Educational and Experience Requirement

Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, banking and finance, or related academic discipline required. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) desirable. Five years major gift experience or experience in a related field. Experience with association membership, annual giving programs, significant sales, external marketing activities, or a related field could substitute for major gift experience. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Secures new gifts and increasing support from prospects with the capacity to make contributions of $50,000 and more within an assigned portfolio to include outright and planned gifts to reach established fundraising goals. Networks effectively with alumni and other supporters and cultivates and engages them with the university. Identifies new and additional prospects for major gift giving to the university.

Primary Responsibilities

Plans, schedules, implements, and evaluates ongoing activities to cultivate major gift prospects leading to solicitation and acquisition of gifts of $25,000 and more. Manages and conducts all aspects of donor relationships to include cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, including gift acquisition and stewardship plans. Identifies potential new sources of support and creative ways to engage such prospects in the development process. Works effectively and collaboratively with a team in a moves management process. Motivates and engages volunteer leadership strategically and thoughtfully. Maintains an active portfolio of 100-150 prospects, which are assigned based on geography, interest and educational background. Works with database to manage cultivation and biographical notes and activities and to ensure thorough recordkeeping. Adheres to Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Code of Ethics and work within the gift acceptance policies established by SHSU. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Possess high level of integrity and character, with the ability to maintain confidential information, and have a deep commitment to work with donors to build relationships. Be a highly motivated, energetic self-starter, who possesses sound judgment and decision making ability, and be detail oriented with solid organizational ability. Demonstrated skill in gift solicitation or closing sales or a combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and ability. An understanding about and commitment to the importance of public higher education, with a desire to embrace the mission of Sam Houston State University. Strategic thinker; analytical; active listener; strong people skills with a warm, empathetic and engaging personality; strong interpersonal communication. Effective speaking and writing abilities. Ability to travel and conduct frequent weekend and evening work.
