Professional Research Assistant



Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

Seeking a full-time, entry-level Professional Research Assistant (PRA) to join a research laboratory within the Department of Craniofacial Biology, School of Dental Medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to projects exploring receptor tyrosine kinase signaling in mammalian craniofacial development. The laboratory utilizes an array of complementary approaches such as phosphoproteomics, next-generation sequencing, conditional mutagenesis in the mouse embryo and in vitro primary cell activity assays to explore novel aspects of craniofacial biology and ultimately, provide therapeutic directions aimed at the prevention of human birth defects such as cleft lip and palate.

The PRA will perform in vitro experiments in primary mouse cell cultures with the goal of determining the effect of growth factor stimulation on cell activity and gene expression. Additional responsibilities will include mouse genotyping via PCR, preparing common solutions and stocks, maintaining laboratory databases and placing laboratory orders. Other duties will be as assigned.

The PRA should be highly motivated and able to work independently, but cooperatively, within a research laboratory environment. The position requires exceptional organizational skills, record-keeping abilities and attention to detail. The PRA should be able to clearly and effectively communicate with the research team and is expected to fully participate in laboratory meetings.

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of relevant laboratory research experience. The candidate must be willing to work with laboratory mice and primary cell cultures. Experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR is required. Experience with tissue culture, cloning, immunofluorescence analysis, dissections and/or histology is highly desirable.

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree.

• Minimum of 2 years' experience in research laboratory setting.

• Willingness to work with laboratory mice and primary cell cultures.

• Experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR is required.

• Excellent communication skills in English and exceptional organizational skills.

• Ability to work independently, but cooperatively, within a research lab.
