Requisition Title: Associate / Full Professor - Chief, Anesthesia and Pain Management - 1801530

Applications are invited for the Chief of Anesthesia and Pain Management, for the joint Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management at the University Health Network (UHN), Sinai Health System (SHS), and Women's College Hospital (WCH). The three hospitals are in geographic proximity, and are fully-affiliated academic hospitals of the University of Toronto. The position is for a 5-year term, renewable once based upon a successful review. The effective start date is September 1, 2018 or shortly thereafter.

The Chief leads a large and complex Department, and has multi-hospital operational responsibility for the medical Department, and clinical and academic oversight of the current complement of over 100 full time academic MD staff members, Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, who provide care in the department. Currently, through institutional arrangements and memoranda of understanding, the Chief also has oversight of Anesthesia programs at two additional facilities (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and Kensington Eye Institute).

The Department has 13 Clincial Anesthesia and Pain Management programs across multiple ambulatory and inpatient sites hosting innovative ambulatory to quaternary and regional clinical programs. The service provides regional and general Anesthesia and Pain Management for ambulatory to quaternary level care; manages acute, chronic and transitional pain services, and ICU care. The Department has active and productive Education, Research, and Quality Improvement programs.

Reporting to the CEOs of all sites, the Chief is responsible for leading this complex medical Department in achieving excellence in clinical care and operations. He/she will do so in partnership with administrative leads at the three organizations, and will work collegially with the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine; and with Foundation leadership across all three organizations to advance philanthropy for the Department.

The Chief will work collaboratively with clinical and operational colleagues in delivering high quality, timely, and efficient Anesthesia and Pain Management services. The Chief is responsible for developing and implementing a vision and strategic plan for the Department in alignment with all the partner Hospitals' missions, visions and values. The Chief will continue to build excellence in academic education and research programs across sites. Important roles include: Managing the department and workflow to meet the mission of all partner organizations, building skills and knowledge to advance health equity throughout the organizations, developing and supporting innovations to advance health system solutions in perioperative services, advancing the appropriateness agenda, bringing evidence-based care and new knowledge into the Department, and enhancing a culture of results and continuous improvement through the use of data and appropriate metrics and indicators.

Applicants must hold an MD and must be certified or eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesia and Pain Management, be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto. The successful candidate must be an outstanding academic leader with proven excellence in prior complex hospital administrative positions, as demonstrated by evidence of prior success in operational, quality and/or clinical program management experience. Candidates should have a strong record of excellence in teaching and research and have a deep commitment to the scholarly enterprise, and experience and/or proven ability to advance peer reviewed research and education in Anesthesia and Pain Management.

Remuneration will be in the range of $250-350,000, not including clinical income, and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
