Job Summary

The Skidmore College Music Department invites applications for a one-year appointment in ethnomusicology. We seek an imaginative, engaging, and energetic teacher with good communication and interpersonal skills and an inclination toward collaboration. The successful applicant will lead World Music Ensemble (preferably, but not necessarily, an African music and dance ensemble) and courses in ethnomusicology of the applicant's design and possibly a variety of courses for non-majors. Depending on the skills and desires of the successful candidate, the appointment could be as Visiting Assistant Professor or Lecturer. The Department is especially interested in candidates whose teaching experience, goals, and approaches will support and contribute to the growing diversity of our academic community; individuals from underrepresented groups, or with experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds, are especially encouraged to apply. PhD preferred; ABD considered.

Review of applications will begin on 5/15 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications must be submitted online to https://careers.skidmore.edu/hr/postings/1496 and should consist of: 1) cover letter; 2) current cv; 3) three letters of reference (to be solicited automatically by our online system). The cover letter should address: the applicant's interest in, and experience with, teaching in a liberal arts environment; the applicant's interest in, and experience with, teaching a diverse student population; and the applicant's teaching strengths, including proposed ensemble and topics to teach at Skidmore. Questions may be referred to Jeremy Day-O'Connell, Chair ([email protected]).

Skidmore College is a highly selective liberal arts college of approximately 2700 students from some 47 states and 46 countries. With its relatively small size and 9:1 student-to-faculty ratio, the College is a close-knit academic community; its faculty of teacher-scholars are devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates. Housed in the renowned Arthur Zankel Music Center, the Music Department embodies the best of Skidmore's rich artistic heritage.
