Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) & NC State Veterinary Hospital, (VH) is to enhance animal and human health and well-being through the education and advanced training of veterinarians and provide leadership in veterinary care and outreach through interdisciplinary partnerships. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine. Each year, nearly 32,000 patients are treated in the VH. The Office of Communications and Marketing (CAM) builds positive relationships between the CVM/VH and the greater community through strategic internal and external communications that convey the college/hospital's brand identity. We strive to highlight the extraordinary, compassionate care of our team of world?leading doctors and highly?skilled staff of the CVM/VH. The position focuses its efforts on: Increasing awareness of the hospital's unique benefits and service. Ensuring consistency in college/hospital wide messaging and visual identity by facilitating integration and coordination of marketing and communications efforts Providing marketing, communication and Web strategy, counsel, and creative services to the hospital. Identifying content/communication opportunities across hospital services and work in collaboration with the communications team in sharing those stories with referring veterinarians, clients and current and prospective donors. Supports both internal and external communications specifically related to hospital priorities and initiatives. The incumbent will interact with clinical faculty, and the many residents, staff and students who work in the VH.

Essential Job Duties: Reporting to the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Hospital Communications Specialist is part of the CVM Advancement team and provides communications and community relations support to the NC State Veterinary Hospital through brochures, communication materials, and electronic media; develops VH programs/service unit communication plans and message points to enhance relationships with clients, referring veterinarians and the public-at-large. Provides writing support, preparing articles, fact sheets, and a broad range of web site content. Collaborates with CVM Communications and Marketing/Hospital Administration team members on media relations, helping to facilitate requests for interviews, provides story information, staffing events, scheduling photo/video shoots, and management of client satisfaction surveys. By connecting the people who share and support the CVM's mission and values, we will ensure the College/Hospital receives the necessary resources sustain its excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship. S/he provides professional level support to ensure that correspondence/communications with the CVM community meets the highest standards of accuracy, quality, and timeliness. Duties of the position include: Assists in the development and implementation of communications that personalize the VH to the community and builds connections between clients, donors and referring veterinarians. Monitor and track projects and assignments to assure that standards for quality and timeliness are met. Anticipate and help to resolve problems, provide assistance or advice, convey special instructions, and ensure communications are being prepared in a timely manner. Review outgoing correspondence for content, appropriateness, conformity and format within University policy, procedure and practice.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Department Required Skills: Knowledge of marketing techniques and promotional writing styles Knowledge of medical/veterinary terminology desired Knowledge and basic graphic design/layout desired Experience using a content management system (CMS) and systems to handle e-newsletters Versatility in adapting written communications for a range of formats and voices. Demonstrated ability to summarize complicated issues clearly and succinctly in composing correspondence, effecting modifications, and attaining agreement with the appropriate constituents (if applicable) on making changes. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects under the pressure of frequent deadlines and changing priorities. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple demands and meeting competing tight deadlines with minimum supervision. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with a wide variety of co-workers and constituents, including senior administrators, faculty, fundraisers, donors, alumni, clients, students, and other friends of the college. Ability to approach assignments in a proactive manner and continually seek to improve internal processes. Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Bachelor's degree in business, journalism, communications, marketing, psychology or related field. Executive correspondence and/or advancement writing experience is preferred. Experience working in advancement communications, donor relations, development, and/or executive communications environments, preferably within a higher education setting. Experience with WordPress and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop). A proven track record in clear and effective writing required. Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of marketing, including media presence, public relations, strategic planning, branding, publications, e-marketing, and social media.
