Public Safety Officers are non-sworn, unarmed employees tasked with providing a safe and secure environment for the university community and all of its members. As members of the Student Life Team, Public Safety Officers are expected to serve as a resource for students and the community; with the overall goal of enhancing the quality of life and student experience on campus.
NOTE: This position requires the ability to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as weekends and holidays.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Basic knowledge of current law enforcement and/or security techniques; have familiarity with Pennsylvania and federal laws and regulations applicable to the university; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to interact with others in a professional manner and use sound judgement when resolving issues and assessing situations; ability to respond to an emergency call-in situation; ability to demonstrate physical and psychological fitness; ability to satisfactorily complete a training program prescribed by the department within a six-month probationary period; ability to use a variety of computer software programs including Microsoft Office products; computerized records management systems, and video surveillance equipment; ability to work differing shifts, or for a specific period of time, to meet university and/or department needs; ability to work mandatory overtime is required; and ability to satisfactorily complete an annual in-service training program.
High school degree or equivalent required. Valid driver's license required. Ability to obtain certification and maintain certification in First Aide, CPR and AED operations is required.
Public Safety Officers must be able to meet the physical demands of the position, including but not limited to: working in extreme weather conditions; ability to ride a bicycle, if assigned; remaining seated in a normal position, or remaining standing for long periods of time; ability to maintain balance while walking, standing, crouching or running; ability to reach up and out with hands and arms; ability to talk and hear and verbally express information or instructions; ability to use hands to grasp objects, type, pick up objects, move objects, or hold objects; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl; ability to climb stairs and/or ladders; ability to pick up, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and carry a distance of 10 feet.
PA ACT 235 and/or 120 certification preferred.
2 years of experience in security or law enforcement preferred. Experience working with a diverse population strongly preferred.
