Job Description:

The University of San Diego (USD) is pleased to announce the search for a new Associate Director. To more effectively serve the USD student community, in our Catholic tradition, the Division of Student Affairs engaged in a re-organization process to enhance student sense of belonging and well-being. An outcome of this reorganization is the development of a commons model, where a leadership team will guide our identity development and social justice work.

This role will work as a member of this leadership team to more intentionally bring together the work of the Black Student Resource Commons, a new LGBTQ+ and Allies Commons, the United Front Multicultural Commonsand the Women's Commons. The individual hired for this role will spend a portion of their time focusing on gender identities by leveraging our existing Women's Commons
work. The new areas of focus include support of our LGBTQ+Allies Commons,with enhancements to our men and masculinities work.The commons model was deliberately selected to represent the idea of a place where resources, ideas and space are shared and where a community can grow.As the commons model develops we envision an environment that demonstrates the value of a holistic approach to promoting identity development and student success and where our entire student community will explore and learn about self and others.

Due to the evolving nature of our work we are seeking an individual with a keen ability to collaborate, someone who can implement visionary ways of working, and who is comfortable adjusting work requirements to meet the needs of students and the USD community.

In the Catholic Higher Education tradition, the Division of Student Affairs creates an educational environment that motivates and inspires student learning and personal development in alignment with the university's co-curricular learning outcomes, serves the University community, and challenges students to make a positive contribution to society. Under the guidance of the Director of Gender Identity Resources and collaborative direction of the Co-Directors, the Associate Director assists in the development, implementation and projects of the Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons. The Associate Director engages the University of San Diego Community in exploring and affirming the unique intersections of each person's identities. The Associate Director is responsible for the on-going development, administration, and coordination of diversity, inclusion, and social justice efforts to improve campus climate and student equity, with a focus on supporting the LGBTQ+ & Allies Community. The Associate Director serves as a liaison and knowledge expert to the campus community regarding issues of diversity, inclusion and multicultural education; serves as an advocate for underrepresented and underserved groups with an emphasis on the LGBTQ+ & Allies Community; and works to create an inclusive campus environment. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities. Direct supervision by the Director, Gender Identity Resources with additional guidance from the Co- Directors of the Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons (DISC). Supervision of graduate students and student assistants when assigned, and in the absence of directors. Informal supervision of facilitators and trainers.

Identity Development

  • Develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates diversity, inclusion, and social justice programming and professional development for campus community and ensure they are aligned with the Division's co-curricular learning outcomes.
  • Takes a leadership role designing and implementing programs and initiatives to support our LGBTQ students and allies.
  • Oversees the Rainbow Educator and Safe Space Allies Programs including facilitator recruitment, training, and professional development. Develops intentional program content supporting both identity specific and intersectional options. Evaluates programs for effectiveness and alignment with learning outcomes.
  • Co-creating and supporting vision for student council. Creates opportunities for students to connect, become involved, and develop skills to thrive.
  • Provide regular opportunities for identity specific (Black, Asian, Female identified, Latinx, Male identified, etc.), engagement among students, faculty and staff to gather and share successes and challenges.
  • Oversees the Black Student Ambassador Program development and leadership, with a specific focus on student leader recruitment, provide guidance to leadership team, and marketing and promotion of events.
  • Creates opportunities for students to connect, become involved on and off campus, and develop tangible skills for students to thrive at USD.
  • Supports diversity, inclusion, and social justice programming for fall and spring orientations.

    Advisement and Supervision
  • Advises students on academic, financial and personal needs.
  • Works collaboratively with the campus constituents focused on student success and retention to collaboratively advise students.
  • Provides oversight for integrated and intentional leadership and identity development across the Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons including training and development of student staff/interns/coordinators.
  • Oversees the Rainbow Educator Advisory Team and Undergraduate Rainbow Educator Leadership Team and continually develops and shapes the vision for the future.
  • Attends events hosted by the Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons, including nights and weekends.
  • Provides support and leadership development to student organizations affiliated with the DISC.

  • Assists the Co-Directors with the day-to-day operations of the DISC.
  • Develops and sustains collaborative partnerships with campus units to achieve the DISC' purposes and goals and promotes the DISC' services, programs, and resources.
  • Serves as a liaison between the DISC and various on-campus departments.
  • Participates on relevant on-campus meetings and committees to enhance diversity, inclusion, and social justice efforts.
  • Conducts constituency needs assessments, formulates recommendations, and implements new programs and services in alignment with university co-curricular learning outcomes.
  • Supports recruitment and retention efforts of LGBTQ+ students, Black students and other groups identified as “at risk.”
  • Assists in the strategic planning processes of the DISC and subsequent implementation and evaluation.
  • Attends joint meetings and retreats.
  • Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student or organizational goals. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.

  • Assumes responsibility for the Commons in absence of the Co-Directors.
  • Serves on committees and performs other related duties, as required.

  • Master's degree required, preferably in student affairs administration or related area (e.g., Counseling, Student Development, Gender Equity, Higher Education).
  • Three years of professional experience beyond the graduate experience in student affairs, minority affairs or a related area.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working effectively with diverse populations, with a particular emphasis on the LGBTQ+ population.

    Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience, education and passion in the areas of diversity and inclusion, social justice, Black student development, women's and gender equity, masculinities, etc.
  • Demonstrate ability to initiate, coordinate, oversee and complete various projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong skills related to group facilitation and training, individual and group advising and student leadership development.
  • Ability to be successful working in flexible, multifaceted environments, with various leadership styles.
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills: ability to work with various campus constituents including students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni; conflict resolution, decision-making and implementation of skills; experience in a leadership/supervisory role.
  • Must exhibit strong attention to detail and organizational skills, ability to remain calm under pressure and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of Catholic social and moral principles as they inform and support the role of Students Affairs personnel serving at a Catholic University.
  • Proven ability to develop, implement and evaluate creative educational programs and services for students, faculty and staff in under-represented, underserved and marginalized groups.
  • Experience with assessment and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with basic accounting and budgetary procedures.
  • Ability to create and design marketing materials for programming using various software applications.
