Alliance Director, Stanford Alliance for Innovative Medicines (AIM)
Stanford ChEM-H is a new interdisciplinary institute focused on connecting Chemistry, Engineering, and Medicine for Human Health. The institute is a joint venture of the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences. Stanford ChEM-H is seeking an Alliance Director to manage the Stanford Alliance for Innovative Medicines (Stanford AIM), an exciting translational research initiative that has been recently launched in collaboration with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd. The role will provide strategic leadership and management for Stanford AIM and will be responsible for managing all aspects of program development, implementation, and evaluation. He/she will play a critical role in the identification of emerging research at Stanford with translational potential, management of the request for proposal and review process, development of scientific work plans in collaboration with Stanford faculty and Takeda scientists, and ongoing support for Stanford faculty projects selected for the program. The Alliance Director will also play a key role in identifying opportunities and advising university leadership on selection, prioritization, and development of partnerships for complementary initiatives in a manner than enhances Stanford's reputation as a premier academic center for translational life sciences.
The Alliance Director will report to the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and the faculty Director of Stanford ChEM-H, and will support the Review Committee and Board of Stanford AIM, who govern the collaboration. The position will also work closely with his/her industry counterpart, an Alliance Director employed by Takeda. Together, the Alliance Directors will serve as the primary points of contact for the Stanford faculty and company scientific project directors selected to participate in the program.

Duties and responsibilities include:
- Define the mission and establish the strategic direction of Stanford AIM, ensuring the necessary financial and human resources to achieve collective objectives. Provide strategic direction for the Stanford AIM program. Set long-range direction and make high-level decisions in collaboration with the ChEM-H faculty director, university leadership, and Stanford AIM Board; propose and manage the implementation of significant programmatic changes as needed; establish program policies as needed.
- Provide the vision and leadership to select and promote superior therapeutic discovery projects. Work with faculty to build and grow areas of acknowledged therapeutic discovery expertise, and assist in translating that knowledge into meaningful therapeutics. An important role of the Alliance Director is to participate actively in the education of faculty and trainees about the process of drug discovery.
- Direct and oversee the drug discovery projects within the Stanford AIM pipeline. Collaborate with the faculty Director of ChEM-H, Stanford faculty and relevant campus stakeholders, university leadership and Takeda collaborators in order to develop, communicate and manage a robust pipeline of projects within Stanford AIM in a manner that enhances Stanford's reputation as a premier academic center for translational life science.
- Advise and assist Stanford faculty on the development of drug discovery proposals and work plans based on ongoing research in their laboratories. Actively identify and support new projects emerging from basic scientific discoveries at Stanford with an eye toward enhancing the diversity of projects within the Stanford AIM pipeline.
- Support Stanford faculty selected as scientific project leads with assessment of project progress, identification of obstacles and development of solutions, evaluation of resource needs and recommendations for resource adjustments.
- Identify, clarify, and resolve highly complex issues pertaining to intellectual property. Establish productive relationships with other teaching and research units across Stanford with the goal of maximizing the impact of drug-discovery related intellectual property emerging from academic research.
- Organize and convene meetings of the Review Committee and the governing Board. Present recommendations for resource allocations and adjustments to the Board, and convey decisions to the faculty project directors. Periodically summarize and report on progress and outcomes to the Board, university leadership, and key stakeholders.
- Advise the ChEM-H faculty Director on emerging opportunities and needs of Stanford AIM and on portfolio management issues.
- Advise the Vice Provost and Dean of Research on new opportunities that are expected to be complementary to the ongoing Takeda collaboration and have the potential of enhancing Stanford's reputation as a premier academic center for translational life science.
- Accountable for ensuring finance, budget, personnel, and resources of Stanford AIM are used appropriately. The Alliance Director will have fiscal, personnel and programmatic responsibility for execution of the projects and will report on progress to the AIM Board.
- Serve as the principal advocate of program projects with the collaborating pharmaceutical company.
- Advise university leadership on technical futures in the area of drug discovery and healthcare biotechnology.
Education & Experience:
Advanced degree in a relevant scientific field (such as an MD, PhD, PharmD, or MD/PhD in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, medicine or relevant areas of engineering), 10 years' experience in pharmaceutical drug development, executive experience in the therapeutic discovery domain within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, financial management of external partnerships and funding sources or a combination of education and relevant experience.

- Successful executive experience in the therapeutic discovery domain within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
- Track record of setting and effectively communicating a compelling and far-reaching vision for a therapeutics discovery enterprise.
- Experience in business development and/or alliance management in the biopharmaceutical industry or a major research university.
- Experience managing CRO relationships.
- Extensive experience leading and managing within a drug discovery research organization, including managing technical and non-technical staff. Track record of assisting in identifying and, ideally, developing top-tier talent in an academic, corporate or related setting.
- Demonstrated extensive experience in all technical aspects of preclinical drug discovery.
- In-depth understanding of the commercial aspects of drug discovery and relevant technical disciplines.
- In-depth knowledge of emerging technology, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles pertaining to biopharmaceutical drug development.
- Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information.
- Advanced oral, written and analytical skills exhibiting fluency in relevant scientific fields and biopharmaceutical product development.
- Ability to leverage an extensive network of mid- and senior-level professionals in the health-related life science industry to identify new collaborative opportunities that enhance Stanford's stature as a purposeful research university.
- Ability to develop program partnerships with Stanford faculty, key individuals in the collaborating pharmaceutical company, and external partners such as CROs and philanthropic donors. Exceptional relationship and consensus building skills.
- Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment, including the ability to motivate and mentor faculty, staff, and collaborators without direct reporting authority.
