Advertised Job Summary
Research and High Performance Computing capabilities at the University of South Carolina are growing at a tremendous pace. Our newest flagship cluster, funded by the Office of the Provost with partner contributions by faculty, has over 6,300 CPU cores rated at 300 Tflops.
Reporting to University of South Carolina Chief Information Officer in the Division of Information Technology with a dotted line to the Office of the Provost, the Director of Research Cyberinfrastructure will manage the research, development, deployment, operation of high performance and research cyberinfrastructure program for the university including comprehensive campuses.
The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of research cyberinfrastructure including high performance computing, technical architectures, and issues; in-depth knowledge and experience of computer use in universities and/or research laboratories; a deep understanding of technical computing and software and storage practices for university research; and extensive knowledge and experience with cloud computing, infrastructure, and services. This individual will also have the ability to think strategically, tactically and creatively, have excellent communication skills, and proven ability to establish and maintain working relationships with researchers, technical staff, institutional executives, and external organizations.
Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics or a related field and ten (10) years working in a large-scale advanced HPC environment. Campus-level experience in planning and supporting research cyberinfrastructure. Experience in integrating HPC resources with high-speed networks, data storage systems and cloud computing environments. Experience organizing workshops related to research cyberinfrastructure. Must have a minimum of five years managing a research cyberinfrastructure team.Preferred Qualifications
PhD in in a field with a strong computational science component. Experience in fostering communications between university research faculty committees and research computing teams; Experience in establishing collaborative relationships with external academic and industrial partners.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Participate as co-PI in grant proposals related to research and high performance computing. Excellent interpersonal skills;
Ability to manage junior colleagues and influence senior colleagues. Skilled in working co-operatively across administrative and academic units. Basic budget and human resources management skills.
This position requires a broad understanding of research cyberinfrastructure, high performance computing, high-speed storage and high-speed network technologies, trends and best practices and an understanding of how current technologies apply to a large spectrum of research areas that include science and engineering, bioinformatics, data analytics, business and humanities.
