Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences consists of 36 faculty who have a diversity of research and teaching interests. Included among our faculty are 11 clinical faculty, affording students the opportunity to participate in research projects with a direct clinical correlation to veterinary and/or human medicine. Our research faculty is housed in a new biomedical Research Building with 104,000 gross sq. ft. New, state-of-the-art research facilities are available to the research faculty in the department. Included in the new Research Building is a transgenic mouse facility, permitting the opportunity for graduate students to participate in research projects related to mouse and animal genomics. A number of graduate programs are available to students interested in working with faculty in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program in CVM consists of several different "tracks", allowing students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which departmental faculty is affiliated include programs in immunology, physiology, and functional genomics.

Essential Job Duties: The Lucas Lab in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina State University is seeking a research technician to join the team. We conduct preclinical research in mouse models to understand the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to psychiatric illness. The successful applicant will help manage the daily operations of the lab and perform experiments. Lab management duties may include ordering supplies, maintaining the mouse colony, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and institutional policies. Meticulous record keeping and organizational skills is essential. Non-managerial duties may include planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research projects as well as acting as laboratory support for other members of the lab, such as performing stereotaxic surgeries, gonadectomies, and estrous cycle monitoring. Travel between NCSU and UNC Chapel Hill may be required. The research technician will be formally mentored and receive training in current experimental methodologies, scientific communication, and data analyses, interpretation, and communication. This position is tailored to applicants that want to gain a couple years' research experience before applying to graduate, medical, or veterinary school. Previous research experience in a neuroscience laboratory is highly desirable but not required.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Department Required Skills: Current or pending bachelor's degree. Highly driven individual with strong aptitude for learning new skills. Ability to coordinate and prioritize concurrent projects (multitask). Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail. Ability to follow experimental protocols. Accurate record keeping and data management skills. Proficiency in standard computer applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Conferred or pending bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, or related field. Previous research experience, particularly using rodent models, is highly desirable, as experience with computer programming for data analysis (i.e. Python, Matlab).
