Job Description:


The Head Wrestling Coach is responsible for managing all aspects of a competitive NCAA Division III Wrestling Program including, but not limited to: recruitment and management of a coaching staff, recruitment of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes, and successful preparation, planning, and strategy for sustaining a highly competitive program. The Head Coach must abide by all NCAA, Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC), and Alfred State College rules. The Head Coach will assume other administrative duties that may include Strength and Conditioning, Game Management, Academic Advising, teaching Physical Education classes, or Equipment Room management. This is a full-time 10-month position.

Duties include but not limited to:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting plan that will identify, recruit, and retain qualified student-athletes that meet College admissions standards and qualifications.
  • Hire, supervise, develop, and evaluate assistant coaches.
  • Oversee a training program to develop the team to its fullest potential.
  • Develop student-athletes by teaching fundamentals, motivation, and promoting positive values consistent with NCAA Division III and the mission of Alfred State College.
  • Responsible for practice planning, preparation, and strategy implementation to ensure proper preparation of student-athletes.
  • Manage all operational, fiscal, and administrative duties associated with the Wrestling program including balancing the annual operating budget.
  • Promote an understanding of, and commitment to, NCAA, College, and ECWC rules and regulations by all coaches and student-athletes associated with the program.
  • Monitor the conduct of coaches and student-athletes to support the mission, image, and reputation of Alfred State College.
  • Ensure a commitment to the academic success of the student-athletes, including monitoring of academic progress and attendance.
  • Coordinate weight training & conditioning program with Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Wrestling program.
  • Fundraise for needed items outside of college base budget earmarked for Wrestling.
  • Involve the Wrestling program in community service.
  • Schedule contests with approval from Director of Athletics.
  • Manage care of appropriate facilities and equipment.
  • Complete and pass annual NCAA on-line rules compliance test prior to the first intercollegiate contest with an 80% or greater.
  • CPR/AED First Aid certification required prior to the first practice.
  • Exhibit the highest degree of sportsmanship and professionalism at all times.

Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:

Reports to the Director of Athletics.

Qualifications / Education / Experience:
  • Commitment to the mission statement, core values, and goals of Alfred State College.
  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's preferred.
  • Collegiate wrestling experience (wrestler or coach) required.
  • Successful Wrestling coaching experience required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff utilizing excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Weekend and Night Availability Necessary.
  • Valid Driver's License Required.
