Through visionary philanthropic commitment in the 2015-16 academic year, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (Lab) and the University of Chicago Charter Schools (UCCS) formed an extraordinary partnership that is designed to benefit the students in both schools and the community that is home to both institutions With a committed and dedicated group of administrators and teachers representing both organizations, several programs were expanded and established to bring students at all levels together and to create innovative educational opportunities for both school communities The overarching goal of the Lab/UCCS partnership is to strengthen existing programs, implement a set of strategies to enhance UCCS's college graduation culture, anchor Lab students more firmly in their surrounding community, and help students at both schools learn from one another. Key areas of focus are cooperative teaching and learning and summer academic enrichment activities such as the Internship for Civic Engagement.

Job Information

Job Summary:

The successful candidate is a self-starter. This is a significantly autonomous position that requires a well-organized and selfmotivated candidate. The individual will work out of our offices located in Hyde Park and report to the Director of Partnerships and the High School Principal or designee.

The successful candidate will provide leadership in the implementation of the Internship for Civic Engagement program and the development of supporting lessons and activities. He/she will direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programming.

Work alongside the UCCS Director of Partnerships to lead the development of overall program goals and strategy in partnership with the UCCS

The Temporary Coordinator, Internship for Civic Engagement Program will serve as the primary program liaison, developing and establishing a collaborative partnership with partner organizations.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop an internship manual and promotional material and updates as needed
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate and ensure appropriateness and relevance of internships for students
  • Designs, develops and produces training information materials to be implemented during the 3-day training boot camp.
  • Plan and conduct weekly internship workshops and information programs
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Civic Engagement to assess the effectiveness of internship programs
  • The Internship Coordinator will assist in matching students with appropriate internships based on the student's areas of interest This process requires creativity, persistence, and exceptional organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Student/Family Support: speaking with students and parents about our program and the expectations to ensure student success
  • Prepare all students for placements, through workshops, written materials and/or one-on-one and team coaching
  • Liaise with employers to advocate for students
  • Assist students in the development of final Capstone Presentations
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and participates in the Capstone Presentation final event
  • Assess the effectiveness of internship programs
  • Tracks expenses for outreach activities and provides status reports relative to grant funds
  • Coordinate and assist other staff with various events and activities throughout the summer
  • Coordinate other summer programs as needed

  • Ability to work flexible working hours
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately, orally and in writing with various individuals and groups
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, community groups, educators, parents, civic associations and the general public as necessitated by the work
  • Familiarity with leading discussion on issue related to socio-economic and racial issues.
  • Skill in public speaking, presentations, and designing programs


Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Advanced degree in education preferred or comparable experience


Experience:
  • Program management experience
  • Classroom experience preferred
  • Leadership experience in youth education required
  • Experience working with a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, learning abilities, class, language and nationality
  • Considerable experience working with students of high school age

Competencies:
  • Knowledge of current techniques and procedures used in the design and development of curriculum
  • Skill in utilizing computer software
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required reports and records
  • Ability to develop visual aids and other instructional materials to meet specific training needs
