About the Unit
The Executive Director of Provost Communications will provide strategic leadership for all communication efforts in the Office of the Provost. Reporting to the Deputy Provost, the Executive Director will focus on strategic messaging for Provost Office priorities and will work closely with both Provost Office and University leadership. An ideal candidate for this role will be an excellent writer who can easily and quickly develop clear and impactful communications on myriad topics for numerous internal and external audiences. This individual will work alongside the University's Office of Communications to ensure that all communications for the Office of the Provost are coordinated and streamlined with broader communications efforts across the University of Chicago. In addition, this person will play an integral role in developing systems for and executing Provost Office communications. The Executive Director of Provost Communications also will collaborate closely with academic divisions; professional schools; centers and institutes; and other units across the University. Furthermore, in an effort to generate additional resources for relevant initiatives, the Executive Director will serve as the Provost's Office liaison with, and generate content for, Alumni Relations and Development. The candidate must be an exceptional project manager with attention to detail, highly organized, and a strong writer and communicator.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Working with the Provost's Office and the Office of the Provost senior leadership team, the Office of Communications and other University leadership, develop and implement a communications strategy for the Office of the Provost so that all University constituencies—faculty, students, staff, alumni and otherwise—remain attuned to the University's progress and impact.
- Identify and understand Provost Office priorities and high-profile topics and prepare relevant and specific communications strategies for such topics. Such strategies may include, depending on the circumstances, combinations of email, web content, face-to-face meetings, and any other methods designed to best ensure the messaging is seen, heard and understood.
- Create a strategic and streamlined communications system and approach for Provost Office messaging and communications so as to ensure, among other things, that communications are deployed timely and successfully and to all necessary constituents.
- Serve as the central communications lead for the Provost's Office and the main point of contact to whom all Provost Office staff direct their communications needs.
- Create and manage the Office of the Provost communications schedule and ensure timely distribution of information about news, events, and other initiatives, including regular messages to the Office of the Provost's email lists.
- Oversee, write and/or edit content for the Office of the Provost website, talking points (for the Provost or other Office of the Provost senior leadership and their designees), invitations, and other priority materials, including one-time reports.
- Serve as the Provost's Office liaison to Alumni Relations and Development (ARD), including communicating with key ARD staff and ensuring the Provost Office's team receives the necessary resources and support from ARD.
- The Executive Director of Provost Communications should anticipate that she/he will work on a diverse and robust set of programs and projects at any given time.

- Exceptional oral and written communications skills required for the effective delivery of the Office of the Provost's priorities.
- A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as social media and web tools. Ability to create distinctive PowerPoint presentations preferred.
- Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and style.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to connect with key constituents across the University.
- Editing skills ensuring error-free messages to internal and external audiences.
- Ability to think creatively to address complex needs and situations for the Provost Office.
- Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative.
- Exemplary attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
- A commitment to executing the responsibilities of this role at any time required, including on nights and weekends as needed.
- Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree strongly preferred.
- A minimum of 10+ years of professional experience in relevant strategic communications, public relations, higher education, or related roles.
- Proven success in communications for higher education and/or non-profit organizations.
- Experience with the University of Chicago and its academic structure, systems, and units strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to influence people to meet goals and deadlines, work collaboratively with senior leadership, consultants, colleagues, and other constituents.
- Experience overseeing strategic communications operations and messaging.
