The built environment is a manifestation of the physical, cultural, and social dimensions of human settlement. Design investigation of new solutions to address our most pressing challenges is rooted in the productive engagement between design culture and the diverse knowledge, abilities, and experiences of producers and users of the architectural project. The legacy of slavery and a prolonged history of social segregation and economic and political disenfranchisement of African-Americans, Indigenous Peoples, Latino/as, and other marginalized groups, continues to impact the culture of construction: who builds, what is built, and for whom.

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the School of Architecture is seeking a fellow who is addressing issues of race or gender in the built environment through the exploration of creative and critical architectural design or/and urban design. The 9-month fellowship carries a half-time teaching load (one design studio in the Fall semester and one topical seminar related to the candidate's area of interest in the Spring semester) to allow the fellow substantive time for the pursuit of creative and scholarly work, the pursuit of publication and presentation venues for this work on the national stage, and the opportunity to publicly share the outcome of the fellowship with the school (through lectures, exhibitions, etc.).

The Race and Gender in the Built Environment initiative, created in 2014 by the School of Architecture, established an Emerging Scholar Fellowship position, the purpose of which is to support the development of future faculty whose work centers on relationships between race, gender, and the built environment in the fields represented in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. While the Fellow for the 2018-19 academic year will directly contribute to the teaching and research of the Architecture programs of the School of Architecture, he or she may also engage scholars in support of his or her work across all the disciplines of the school (including Architectural History, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Interior Design, Sustainable Design, and Community and Regional Planning), as well as across campus in programs and departments such as American Studies, African and African Diaspora Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies.

The successful candidate will hold a professional degree complemented by design production which critically investigates the design implications of race and gender in the built environment.
