Assistant Director, Disability Resources, Academic Achievement Center

The Office of Disability Resources in the Academic Achievement Center provides a number of services to students who have a documented medical condition, are physically challenged, or have psychological or learning disabilities.
Position Summary: The Assistant Director for Disability Resources is responsible for coordinating efforts to make the University accessible to all students with disabilities, evaluating needs for classroom accommodations, and providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations to students under the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) of 2008. The Assistant Director will also provide educational training on serving the needs of students with disabilities to staff and faculty. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Director of the Academic Achievement Center. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises professional staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate student workers, and contract employees who provide direct accommodation services to students with disabilities. This is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.
Essential Duties: 1. Coordinate the provision of support services to students with documented disabilities, including readers, note-takers, scribes, interpreters, tutors, Braille, large print, books on tape and test accommodations. 2. Interpret medical and psycho-educational reports to determine eligibility for services, assess disability related needs, and develop individual academic accommodation/service plans. 3. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to implement educational approaches and accommodations for students with disabilities and coordinate with other departments including Residence Life and Housing, Veterans Center, Financial Aid, Facilities, the Bookstore, Transportation, Health Services, Counseling Center, Athletics and Recreation, Campus Police, the Registrar's Office, Student Involvement and Leadership, and Information Technology to ensure that student accommodation plans are implemented in a timely and appropriate manner. 4. Review and process disability documentation, and determine appropriate classroom and related accommodations. 5. Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate professional staff, graduate assistants, and student employees, who provide support services to students in the Office of Disability Resources. 6. Coordinate and facilitate educational and disability awareness programming for students, faculty, and staff through seminars, speaker series, workshops, print and web materials regarding accommodation approaches, including adaptive and assistive technology. 7. Oversee the management of the adaptive technology lab. 8. Provide consultation to faculty and staff concerning disability related matters. 9. Serve as a liaison with rehabilitation agencies and community resources; participate in outreach programs to local community colleges and secondary education institutions. 10. Serve as a resource to the University on policy development regarding students with disabilities. 11. Maintain student medical records and other documentation and files. 12. Collaborate with the Learning Disability Specialist, Heath Services, Counseling Center, the Office of Equal Opportunity, and Facilities and Planning to define programs and services for persons with documented disabilities, and serve on the Disability Resource Advisory Committee (DRAC). 13. Work with the Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects to support projects and improvement in current services available to students with disabilities. 14. Work cooperatively with the Director of the Academic Achievement Center in the supervision and delivery of learning assistance and advising services to persons with disabilities. 15. Stay current on federal and state regulations to develop and refine appropriate policies and procedures. 16. Use the Banner student information system to extract and analyze data on students with disabilities in order to identify trends and assess needs. 17. Work with staff, faculty, and appropriate University Offices to develop and maintain and comprehensive needs assessment for students with disabilities; provide leadership and resources for the design of program and strategies to respond to those needs, include student-focused events as well as faculty and staff development initiatives. 18. Serve as a member of the BSU Campus Awareness and Response Team (CARE). 19. Assist the Director of the Academic Achievement Center with the management of the direct service budget. 20. The Assistant Director will be expected to work some evenings and weekends. 21. Function as a team member of the Academic Achievement Center in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the department and the University.
Required Qualifications: 1. Master's degree in special education, rehabilitation counseling, psychology, education psychology or related field. 2. Minimum of 3-5 years related experience in a leadership role providing academic support services to students. At least one (1) year of this experience in a higher education setting is strongly preferred. 3. Exceptional skills in the understanding and application of Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, ADAAA and other federal laws and regulations governing access for students with disabilities. 4. Experience interpreting psycho-educational and neuropsychological assessments. 5. Strong knowledge base of all major physical and psychological disabilities and proven success supporting individuals with disabilities. 6. Experience designing and delivering faculty and staff development workshops that increase awareness of the needs of students with disabilities. 7. High degree of personal and professional integrity, respect for privacy and confidentiality, a sense of ethics, and a commitment to educating students. 8. Knowledge of assistive computer technology and other enabling technologies. 9. Effective communication and interpersonal skills; evidence of problem solving skills. 10. Strong computer and analytical skills; ability to work with Microsoft office products and student information systems.
Preferred Qualifications: 1. Experience working in a higher education setting is strongly preferred. 2. Experience working with the Banner student information system 3. Experience providing and/or coordinating the delivery of American Sign Language (ASL) services is highly desirable.

Salary Range: $62,000- $65,000
