Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Intellectual Property Counsel

Utah Valley University is seeking an energetic, forward-thinking individual to lead the Office of Technology Commercialization (“OTC”). The Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Intellectual Property Counsel (“Director”) is responsible for the cultivation, assessment, protection, and commercialization of intellectual property and other transferable knowledge generated at the University. The Director establishes and implements strategies to maximize the social and economic impact of University research, discoveries, inventions, and creative works through OTC's commercialization efforts and its support of related entrepreneurial endeavors. The Director acts as primary point of contact and steward to resolve problems and issues affecting intellectual property and licensing at all levels within the University. The Director also provides legal counsel and services on commercialization and other intellectual property matters. Supervised by the Research Officer and the General Counsel, the Director will work closely with UVU's Technology Commercialization Committee and with faculty and staff to identify intellectual property with potential for commercialization, and to facilitate collaborations with private-sector partners. The Director will help assess the commercial potential, and patent feasibility where applicable, of intellectual property opportunities and recommend and implement commercialization and intellectual property protection strategies. In addition, the Director will negotiate and draft licensing and other intellectual property agreements. The Director will also manage and work on patents with faculty/staff and also coordinate with and manage outside patent counsel. The Director will provide other intellectual property (copyright and trademark) legal counsel and work on other intellectual property projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Significant experience commercializing intellectual property in successful businesses. Experience working in-house with technology companies or start-ups, at a law firm regularly advising technology companies or start-ups, or working in technology transfer or commercialization at a higher education institution. A Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school is required. Must be licensed and in good standing in the State of Utah, or in another U.S. state and able to become admitted in Utah within 6 months.

Driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong business acumen. Strong knowledge and demonstrated understanding of commercialization and intellectual property matters, patents, and licensing. Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in areas of expertise. Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research as well as patent processes. Demonstrated understanding of ethical issues in a university setting.

Intellectual acumen and flexibility to analyze, interpret, present, and write about complex issues clearly and concisely. Strong computer fluency skills, including the ability to conduct legal and other research.
Strong work ethic. Able to work efficiently and independently, as well as on a team, taking ownership in providing responsive, high quality, and professional legal services to university clients. Ability to supervise and train employees, including scheduling and prioritizing work assignments; prioritize projects and issues; facilitating solutions and gaining compromises without damaging relationships; leading by influence and consensus; representing institutional concerns persuasively to internal and external parties; and maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion in addressing sensitive topics.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who have passed the patent bar. Specific experience representing colleges or universities is desirable but not required.

Physical Requirements:
Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment.

Pay Range: $73,376 to $100,00 - DOE With an additional 14.2% towards retirement
