Director of Government Relations

Job description


The Director of Government Relations reports directly to the President, is a member of the President’s Executive Council, and has primary responsibility for developing and managing strong relationships between the University and Federal, State, and local governmental elected officials and agencies.


The primary responsibility of the Director will be, at all governmental levels, to identify resource opportunities for the University from governmental sources and to work with government officials and their staffs to acquire resources for the University.  Additional responsibilities will be: to monitor and analyze all legislative and other governmental initiatives that are likely to have a significant impact on the University and to work with government officials to make that impact a positive one; to develop cooperative and helpful relationships with elected officials and agencies of government that improve the image and position of the University and facilitate opportunities for the University to serve the State and to contribute to the various efforts and initiatives of government leadership; and to provide oversight for the development of information and support materials necessary to advance initiatives and legislation important to the University.


The qualifications required for the position include: a bachelor’s degree, at a minimum; an advance degree is preferred; at least ten years of significant experience and exercise of responsibilities of the type inherent in a senior position in government relations; knowledge of both New Jersey and Federal government and government officials; experience in or substantial knowledge about public higher education, and, in particular, the complexities of higher education finance and government appropriations processes; excellent communication skills in both speaking and writing; the ability to represent and advocate for the University’s interests effectively and in ways that enhance the image of the institution; and the inclination and talent to meet, greet, and cultivate a large number of relationships on behalf of the University.  Prior experience or positions, including elected office, associated with a political party do not disqualify a candidate, if the individual can demonstrate the capacity to be an effective advocate for the University with representatives of both major parties.
