Job description

The Department of Critical Media Practices (DCMP) seeks candidates for a position at the associate professor or full professor level who will enrich our program with its commitment to cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies. Candidates should demonstrate scholarly and/or artistic engagement in emerging media practices from a broad perspective. Expertise might include any of the following: performance media, media art, immersive media, creative nonfiction, and sound practices. The successful candidate will demonstrate achievement in media arts practices and contribute to our evolving undergraduate program by providing leadership and a creative approach to pedagogy.

DCMP offers a BA in Media Production, an MFA in Interdisciplinary Documentary Practices and (as of fall 2017) a PhD in Emergent Technologies and Media Art Practices. For more information, please see the entry for Critical Media Practices at The department adopts a distinctive approach to the evolving landscape of media-making and the need to provide alternatives to conventional academic compartmentalization. In addition to working with faculty throughout the new college (CMCI), our campus collaborators include faculty from Anthropology, Art and Art History, Dance, English, Film Studies, Geography, Music, and Theater. Facilities include technologically sophisticated lab/production capabilities, and campus resources such as the ATLAS Institute.

The College of Media, Communication and Information is the first new college at CU in 53 years. CMCI is at the forefront of the revolution in communication and digital technology, and is a distinctive, collaborative, interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial enterprise where students engage with world-class faculty to learn, create and analyze media content in all its many forms. CMCI is establishing a new standard for teaching and scholarship in communication, media and information, and we are seeking faculty to join our growing enterprise and who can contribute to building a diverse educational environment through research, teaching, and/or service.

Requirements for the position include a terminal degree, a substantive record of scholarly and/or creative achievement, and a strong commitment to teaching. We welcome applicants from allied or relevant fields such as Art and Art History, Cinema, English, or Theater. Teaching responsibilities include course development and teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level, providing leadership in undergraduate education, and serving on graduate thesis and dissertation committees.
