The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering invites applications for a full-time Research Associate position in Prof. Mija Hubler's research group. The University of Colorado provides an outstanding, world-class research environment. A highly motivated and independent Research Associate is sought with training and expertise in experimental mechanics and numerical methods pertaining to structural topology optimization and cementitious materials. The project, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), involves engineering mechanical properties of hybrid living materials.

The Research Associate will design, organize, and conduct advanced characterization experiments using established protocols and conduct structural topology optimization numerically. When appropriate, the Research Associate will design new protocols to advance specialized experimentation and materials characterization techniques related to the structure, function, and growth of hybrid living materials.

Require a PhD in Structural Engineering, Physics, Material Science, or Mechanical Engineering.

  • Knowledge in mechanical experimental design and execution
  • Programming skills
  • Excellent writing skills, as evidenced by multiple peer-reviewed publications
  • Willingness to work with an interdisciplinary team, and explore the link between living organisms and cement
  • Ability to work independently
