Rank and Salary: The Department of Comparative Biosciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for a full-time, 12-month, Visiting Veterinary Research Specialist to perform cellular, biochemical and physiological research in a molecular biology laboratory. This is a 1-Year position that may become regular dependent upon departmental funding. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include possession of a B.S. degree in biology, biochemistry, virology, microbiology, molecular biology or biochemistry. An M.S. or Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, virology, microbiology, molecular biology or biochemistry is preferred. A minimum of two years' experience in biology and/or molecular biology/biochemistry is required. Experience with cell culture methods, DNA, RNA, protein work, mouse colony management and fluorescence microscopy is also required. Research experience with cell biological and biochemical methods and genetic techniques is preferred. Knowledge of molecular and cell biology techniques including: gene cloning and expression RT-PCR, Western blotting and immunoprecipitation is required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cell cultures and primary cultures; perform transfections.
  • Maintain mouse colonies, genotyping.
  • Perform gene cloning, gene expression, and protein characterization using Western blotting and immunoprecipitation methods.
  • Construct and characterize recombinant DNA expression vectors.
  • Perform PCR or RT-PCR assays.
  • Perform fluorescence microscopy on cell cultures.
  • Assist with data compilation and analysis.
  • Contribute to publications.
  • Train other laboratory personnel on techniques and lab procedures.
  • Assist with inventory, scheduling, equipment maintenance and other duties integral to laboratory functions.
