The School of Engineering at Stanford University is excited to offer a position engaged with its expanding diversity initiatives, the Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion. We seek an energetic colleague, one who will thrive on the opportunity to assist in executing the vision of our new Director of Diversity and Inclusion to meet the challenges articulated in the SoE Future White Paper on Diversity (http://soefuture.stanford.edu/mission
). Our existing Engineering Diversity Programs (https://engineering.stanford.edu/students/engineering-diversity-programs
) have had a tremendous impact at the undergraduate level and have started to improve outcomes at the graduate level. With increased resources, however, there can be improvement at all levels, with the greatest opportunities for new initiatives at the graduate and postdoctoral level. These initiatives will shepherd forward a critical culture change currently underway within Stanford's School of Engineering to meet the twin goals of having Stanford engineers at all levels experience the success that comes from working with diverse teams and having Stanford engineering students experience an environment inclusive of all aspects of their personal identities (race/ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, disability status, first-generation status, socioeconomic level, and broader diversity). Our goal is for Stanford engineering to become the go-to destination for students of all backgrounds with interest in success through excellence and diversity. Work under the direction of the Director of Diversity and Inclusion to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the diversity and inclusion efforts at the School of Engineering. Core Duties* Participate in the development, implementation, and administration of programs which support diversity and inclusion in the School of Engineering. In consultation with our senior academic analyst, analyze data, create reports, and review trends, leading to program improvement recommendations. Programs include on-boarding programs for incoming undergraduate and graduate students, graduate and postdoctoral recruitment programs, and mentoring programs. Assist in the development, teaching, and administration of curriculum for on-boarding programs for incoming first-year undergraduates (residentially based Stanford Summer Engineering Academy) and first-year graduate students, as well as bias trainings for faculty, staff, and students in the School of Engineering. Advise students in SSEA. Work closely with Math and CS departments to recruit and train TAs for courses which assist students coming from under-resourced high schools. Advise engineering diversity societies. Perform outreach activities, including program communications, events, conferences, partnerships, and fundraising. Recruit potential graduate students through events and diversity conferences around the country. Write and edit content for proposals, funding grants, and other program activities. Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. May supervise student staff. * - Other duties may also be assigned Qualifications Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree and two or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Preferred qualifications: advanced degree, program administration experience, research experience, engineering background. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of diversity and inclusion. Knowledge of issues affecting diverse students, including issues of disparities in educational background, family education history, class, race, gender, age, disability, sexuality, and immigration status. Cultural sensitivity and humility across a spectrum of diversity broadly defined. Familiarity with literature and studies related to the issues around diversity and inclusion in engineering programs, education, and in the technology industry; interest in contributing to the on-going discussion of best practices. Familiarity with processing and analyses of quantitative information, such as student financial aid policies, different kinds of internal and external financial aid, and the issues related to using combinations of aid sources. Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff. Physical Requirements*
Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks. Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds. Rarely sort/file paperwork. Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
