Community Engagement Director

Seeking Bonner Community Engagement Director(s):

The Bonner Foundation is currently seeking two individuals to serve as Community Engagement Directors for the national network. These individuals will join the Foundation’s small staff team in the Princeton, NJ office.

The Bonner Community Engagement Directors will work closely with other Foundation staff (including the President and Vice President) to strengthen the implementation of the Bonner Program and campus-wide community and civic engagement efforts at its 65 partner campuses. In particular, the Bonner Community Engaged Scholarship Directors will focus on strategic priorities for engaging students in related coursework, especially through capstones. Sh/e will work with other members of the Foundation staff (including the President and Vice President) to develop resources for administrators, faculty, and student leaders. S/he will work with staff, faculty, and student leaders at campuses throughout the nation to develop and strengthen community partnerships and the ways in which they can develop the capacity of local schools, agencies, and nonprofits. This position offers a national leadership opportunity to work with a respected foundation with nearly thirty years of experience in working with colleges and universities across the country to build their programs, infrastructure, and culture for community engagement.

The Bonner Community Engagement Director will help:

  • Design and manage Bonner Foundation initiatives for supporting member campuses in their strategic and program planning and improvements;
  • Design and implement strategies, curriculum, and models for to be used by staff, faculty, and students;
  • Help plan national conferences and programming involving a range of constituents including students, faculty, administrators, provosts, and presidents;
  • Develop new or refine existing handbooks, program materials, training, curriculum, and co-curricular reflection activities that are used by campus programs;
  • Nurture the talent and professional development of student leaders, staff, and faculty at campuses throughout the national network;
  • Design resources for campus centers that can bolster their connection and collaboration with other units on campus (such as centers for teaching and learning, international study, offices of diversity and inclusion, and academic departments);
  • Develop and carry out assessment initiatives to document and determine the effectiveness and implementation challenges and successes for academic community engagement

Salary:

  • Commensurate with relevant experience (range of $35,000-55,000/year depending on years of professional experience). The position and salary are defined in this way to encourage applicants with a range of professional experience (3-15 years) to apply (as we have two positions)

About the Bonner Foundation and Bonner Program (www.bonner.org):

The Bonner Foundation supports a national network of 65 colleges and universities which in turn recruit, educate, manage, and support approximately 3,000 students annually in four-year developmental experiences in community and civic engagement. With student leadership at the core, the model provides campuses with a way to strengthen student development, community partnerships and impact, and campus-wide centers and infrastructure for engagement. With a focus on improving college access and completion, the Bonner Program especially provides low-income, first generation, and students of color with financial support while they engage in service in local, national, and international contexts. Started in 1990 at Berea College, the Bonner Program has since expanded to campuses around the country. Known as a national model for campus-based community engagement, these programs have graduated more than 15,000 alumni.

Longitudinal assessments affirm the positive impacts of the Bonner Program on retention, completion, and lifelong civic involvement. Many graduates seek careers in social change, with a third working in the nonprofit sector and another third working for government. Bonner Scholars and Leaders often earn institutions’ top awards and are well represented in annual awards from Campus Compact, the Newman Fellows, and other fellowships. The Bonner Foundation has been recognized with many awards, including from the Council of Independent Colleges, for its work to improve the lives of individuals and communities. More than half of established campuses with programs have earned the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, which recognizes deep and sustained community engagement. The Bonner Program itself is structured to provide students with deep, transformational, place-based community engagement in which students develop a range of competencies including for diversity and intercultural competence, civic and political engagement, and leadership. The program intentionally promotes is Common Commitments including community building, diversity, international perspective, spiritual exploration, and social justice. With a small central office, the Bonner Foundation plays a central role in providing resources, meetings, and technical assistant to campuses in the Bonner Network.
