Associate Director, Disability Services

Job description

The Associate Director for the Disability Services Program is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office under supervision of the Director. The Associate Director will provide direct, comprehensive accommodations review and collaborate with academic departments and staff working to ensure compliance for students with documented disabilities. This position will supervise the Accommodation Specialists, and the Interpreter Coordinator. This person will coordinate assessment and report writing in collaboration with the Director and contribute to monitoring and development of budgets and operational costs. This person will provide leadership and direction for the department on policy issues, ADA research and compliance, accommodations grievance process, and any personnel issues including supervision of staff. This person must demonstrate a commitment to the principles of equity, and inclusion, student development, universal design for learning, and diversity through involvement and participation in university/division-wide projects and initiatives. This person is a member of the Area Leadership Team. This position reports to the Director of Disability Services.

Essential Functions

Departmental Leadership and Management

  • Assist the Director in areas of strategic visioning, implementation, and assessment for the DSP office; in the absence of the Director, provide leadership on policy development, sign language interpreter and staff supervision and departmental administration.
  • Manages day to day operations of the department including maintaining the offices student tracking software ClockWork.
  • Assist the Director with university-wide faculty and staff training.
  • Accommodations
  • Meets with assigned caseload of students.
  • Facilitates student awareness of departmental services and policies.
  • Review and evaluate documentation to determine reasonable accommodations.
  • Coordinate, services, equipment and assistive technology required for the provision of reasonable accommodations.
  • Serve as the second point of resolution for formal grievances within the accommodations process, this includes reviewing and gathering information relevant to the concern, conflict resolution, and mediation.


  • Accommodations Review, Evaluation, Outreach, Implementation and Support/Compliance with ADA and other applicable legislation.
  • Maintains accurate notes in Clockwork and Banner on student, family communication, faculty, and staff communication.
  • Coordinate and implement assessment and report writing.


  • Train, supervise and evaluate 2 full-time Accommodations Specialists and an Interpreter Coordinator.
  • Provide support and guidance for Accommodations Specialists in addressing concerns relating to the approval or implementation of accommodations.

Professional Development and other Duties as Assigned

  • Coordinate on-going professional development program within the department.
  • Facilitates Orientation and Education sessions for Undergraduate and Graduate students.
  • Serves on the Area Leadership team.
  • Represents the department on various committees and other Special Projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Education, Special Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Higher Education Administration or related field.
  • 5-7 years related experience, including 3 years of experience with supervision and 3 years of experience working in disability services at a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience reviewing, evaluating, and determining accommodations for college students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with department management and leadership.
  • Experience developing and implementing assessment plans and reports.
  • Experience with ADA or disability related policy development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing a developmental approach in supporting and engaging students with multiple intersecting social identities including but not limited to disability, race, LGBTIQ, international, etc.
  • Experience in project management and implementation of new initiatives.
  • Experience working with and/or providing services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities.
  • Experience with ClockWork student tracking software and Universal Design for Learning strategies.
