Academic Career & Executive Search is pleased to assist The CUNY School of Medicine in their search for an Assistant Dean for their Physician Assistant Program.  The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. The position reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine offers excellent benefits, compensation, an ideal and vibrant location and easy access to public transportation. Supported by a dedicated staff and motivated student body, the successful candidate will assume full responsibility for the administration of the program. The PA program is a 28-month graduate program leading to a M.S. degree and certification as a Physician Assistant pending successful completion of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination. 

Responsibilities:

  • As chief executive of the PA program, provide direction and leadership in the supervision, coordination and long-range planning for all aspects of the academic and educational operations including:
    • Operational oversight
    • Support and implementation of policies and procedures to meet program goals through services
    • Academic support for the students
    • Coordination of programmatic activities with the medical director of Harlem Hospital and other hospitals affiliated with the Program
  • Facilitate collaboration and integration of the PA program with the school's BS/MD program
  • Fiscal management of the program and preparation of capital budgets of over $1 million.
  • Implement and evaluate curricula, instructional and educational programs associated with academic progress of students
  • Establish, monitor and maintain standards in compliance with accrediting agencies
  • Provide direction of the activities for administrative staff, faculty, clinical coordinator (full-time employees) and adjunct faculty

Qualifications:

  • This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan and requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience
  • Master's degree
  • PA-C (certified) or a Board-Certified MD, or DO with medical license in NYS
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in physician assistant education or in a health-related discipline is required
  • Strong clinical and academic experience
  • Successful record of developing proposals for funding
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, multiculturalism and affirmative action and must be sensitive to and possess interest in working with minority students in an urban educational setting in New York
  • Demonstrated commitment to PA education and the profession.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree
  • Experience and interest in inter-professional education are highly desirable
  • Experience in administration and accreditation of academic programs is strongly preferred

The Harlem Hospital Physician Assistant Program was founded in 1970 as a joint project of the Harlem Hospital Center and Columbia University School of Public Health. The program is one of the oldest in the country, founded only five years after the birth of the profession. It was developed to train individuals with prior health care experience to practice primary care in communities of greatest need.

In 1972, the Program developed an academic affiliation with Antioch College which continued until the New School for Social Research assumed responsibility from 1974-1978. In 1978, the Program partnered with the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education of the City College of New York (CCNY) and now is The CUNY School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program.
